MECHANISM FOR- PRODUCING GAS-LIGHTED FLASH-SIGNS THE LIKE FOR ADVERTISING PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed September 7, 1912. Serial No. 719,043.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Jackson, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 7 Milton Court road, New Cross, London, S. E, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Mechanism for Producing Gas-Lighted Flash-Signs and the Like for Advertising Purposes, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to mechanism for producing gas lighted flash signs and the like for advertising purposes of the type in which an expanding and contracting chamber operates a tilting device having a gravity controlled element for operating the control valve, and has for its object the im-. proved arrangement and construction of a self contained apparatus of a simple form which is adapted to operate by the gas pressure itself in a reliable manner.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a tiltable control valve such for example as that described in United States Letters Patent 1,042,117, dated Uctober 22, 1912, in a fixed manner upon the movable wall of an expansible chamber adapted to take positions of varying angularity during the motion of expansion and contraction of said chamber produced by its periodic inflation with the illuminating gas, and means by which the moving connections between the gas supply, the burner supply and the expansible chamber are effected within the said chamber itself.
In order that the invention may be the better understood. I will now proceed to describe the same in relation to the accompanying drawings, reference being had to the letters and figures marked thereon.
Like letters refer to like parts in the various figures in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a gas pedestal lamp with my invention installed in the base thereof. Fig. 2 is a full size plan of the valve seat in a modified form to serve two lamps. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same.
To carry the invention into effect within a suitable casing or upon a suitable stand or frame a I fixedly mount an expansible chamber 6 such as a bellows having a wall 0 adapted to oscillate through a given angle and upon the wall 0 I mount the tiltable control" device (Z. This device is provided with three sets of orifices or ports 6 f and 9 communicating with the interior of the chamber 6, 7 for connection to the gas supply ]t and f/ for connection to the burner 2'. The orifice e for the chamber 6 opens directly thereinto, while the two orifices f and are connected to flexible pipes 7' and 70 leading through the fixed wall Z of the chamber 2') communicating with the gas supply h and burner 2' respectively, or other movable devices adapted to form a continuous means of communication between a fixed device and a moving device may be used. The orifices f and g are controlled by a double tilting valve m on the top of which a ball a is adapted to roll to tilt the valve m from part of the seating to the other. I prefer to mount the gas standard 0 upon the upper part of the casing or frame a immediately over the expansible chamber 72 so that it forms a substantial and convenient pedestal for supporting the gas standard 0.
It will be seen that directly the gas is turned on at the supply 72. the chamber 6 alternately expands and contracts under the action of gas supply and delivery respectively and in so doing tilts the tiltable device (Z from one side to another so that the weight of the ball a under the action of gravity is utilized to work the control valve an about its knife edge 79 to effect the alternate action automatically.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have provided an additional orifice which can be connected with a second burner to obtain a duplicate effect of an alternating character, such as might be required for a two color sign.
Having thus fully described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A flash lighting apparatus comprising an expansible chamber having a movable part adapted to move through a curvilinear path, so as to take up posit-ions of varying angularity, a gravity controlled valve arrangement directly mounted in a rigid manner on the said movable part and means contained within the said chamber for connecting the gas supply and the lighting burner with the said valve arrangement whereby the said valve arrangement will automatically control the admission and delivery of the gas when the said chamber arrangement with supply and delivery pipes mounted in the Wall of the fixed part of the expansible chamber, substantially as 15 described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
THOMAS J AOKSON.
