IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS AND FIRE-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,149, dated August 18, 1874; application filed August 15,1373. s p p v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR PAGET, of
Loughborough, England, have invented cer-' tain Improvements in Pumps and Fire-Engines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of one or more flexible chambers, formed of water-tight material and attached at opposite sides or ends of the chambers to plates or disks, which are made conveniently movable by foot or other power toward and from each other upon a hinge or joint, so as to cause the flexible chambers to act as bellows, drawing in and forcing out the fluid, through suitable valves and pipes, from a convenient reservoir, to which the whole may be attached; and in case the apparatus to be used is small, the whole may be made portable. An air-chamber, to act as in an ordinary forcepump, is secured above the valve through which the fluid passes from the flexible chamber on its way to a pipe, from which it is delivered through a discharging-nozzle so constructed as to throw streams of various forms, adapted to various purposes, as hereinafter shown.
Figure 1 shows the apparatus formed by attaching the pump and other parts to a portable reservoir. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view (vertical section) through the reservoir, with a compartment guarded by a perforated disk or screen, and a vertical section through the pump and air-chamber, also through the flexible chamber and base-piece. Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal vertical section through the apparatus, with the reservoir in elevation beyond. Fig. 4 shows the application of two flexible chambers in vertical section.
The reservoir R is supported upon a footed base-piece, B, which is provided with .the connecting-passages c, to admit the fluid from the compartment under the screens in the reservoir into the flexible chamber f, which is secured to the base B below, and to the top plate 10 above. The flexible chamber f is extended by the spring .9 which may be placed directly under the foot-piece F if no attached reservoir is used with the pump. The top plate over the flexible chamber carries the air-chamber A, and is provided with the discharge-passage d, leading to the flexible pipe D, terminating with the nozzle-pin N, provided with the reversible rose 1" and the sliding spreader S. The working parts of the pump are provided with the upper and lower valves v and c and, for convenience in construction, the flexible chamber is so formed with disks or heads h it that it may be removed and replaced between the top and base pieces at pleasure by means of the bolts and nuts b b, as shown in the draw- 1ngs. the joints tight, and the flexible chamber is, preferably, made of tanned canvas or cloth lined with thin rubber tubing or other suitable flexible material impervious to water.
Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show an example of a-siugle flexible chamber in the apparatus, which,
by working the foot-plate F up and down, causes the flexible chamber to expand and compress, and thereby draws into it, and forces through it into the air-chamber and through the discharge-pipe, whatever fluid may be supplied to the reservoir or suction-pipe c. It is often convenient to dispense with the attached reservoir and use an ordinary pail, into which a short suction-pipe is led from the extremity of the passage 0, leading to the base of the flexible chamber.
When two or more flexible chambers are used they may be arranged to employ both feet of the operator, as shown in Fig. 4, in which the top plate is extended each way from the pivot or rocking axis P, while in the single pump only one foot is employed to operate. The double-chambered pump, Fig. 4, enables the operator to stand upon the top plate with both feet and impart arocking motion, by which the pumping action is obtained. The action of the valves will be readily understood by inspection of the drawings, Figs. 2, 3, 4.
It is found that a continuous stream will be projected from the discharging-nozzle of the apparatus by a very slow motion and moderate pressure of the foot of the operator.
The perforated diaphragm or strainer s is for the purpose of preventing improper materials from entering the passage-ways, thereby obstructing the action of the pump.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

2. A portable reservoir provided with a strainer, in combination with an attached flexible chamber external to said reservoir,
and surmounted by an air-chamber, and having a spring for expanding said flexible chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with an axis carrying the foot-plate of a pump, of a spring for actuating the foot-plate in one direction, and an air-chamber, operating substantially as shown and described.
4. In portable pumps operated by the foot, the construction and arrangement of aflexible chamber provided with suitable openings and Valves, in combination with an axis and a spring for expanding said flexible chamber, substantially as shown and described.
