tmrTnn STATES! PATENT orrron I JOSEPH OBSTLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DERRICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH OBSTLER, a subject of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derricks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is an improvement in derricks, more particularly their foot portion, whereby I provide therein a universal self-oiling joint.
The drawings show only one of the specific forms and embodiments which my invention is adapted to take.
In them, Figure l is a side elevation of a derrick embodying my improved foot portion; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of said foot portion, the view being partly in side elevation and partly in mid-Vertical section: Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the collar shown detached.
I will now describe the specific devices of the drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a derrick of any usual or preferred type or construction, wherein I have shown my improvement embodied at A. The general construction and operation of this derrick will be understood by those skilled in the art and, besides, a detailed description thereof is not necessary to an understanding of my own improvement A, which is shown on a larger scale in Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive, and which I will now proceed to describe as follows: The foot of the derrick consists of a lower stationary part 1 adapted to be bolted through holes 2 (Fig. 3) to the derrick-platform 3 (Fig. 1). The foot further comprises an upper movable part 4 supported on the stationary part 1, to rock or tilt universally thereon by a ball and socket joint next to be described, said upper part t having a cup or socket portion 5 (Fig. 2), which snugly receives down into it the base of the derrick-mast 6 (Fig. 1), and in front of said cup having a pair of perforated lugs 7, between which the lower end of the derrick-boom 8 is pivoted on a pin 9 (Fig. 1).
The aforesaid ball and socket joint consists of a ball portion 10 projecting upwardly from the part 1 and of a socket or cup 11 projecting downwardly from the part 4 over the ball 10. Y
12 is an annular wall concentric with the base of the ball 10, to provide an annular oil-receiving recess 14% around the base of said ball from which the oil is drawn by capillary attraction up into the space between the ball and socket, and thereby keeps the parts constantly lubricated.
15 is an oil hole through the socket, by which to deliver the oil into the oil recess 14, said oil running down in the space between the ball and the socket, especially Iglolwn the grooves 16 in the surface of the 17 is a collar consisting of two half-circular pieces connected by the bolts 18, said collar surrounding the outside of the wall 12 with a rigid clamping fit and surrounding the outside of the socket 11 with a bearing fit, so that the parts of the ball and socket joint are held together without interfering with the universal play of the joint. The space between the aforesaid collar and socket likewise keeps itself constantly lubricated from the oil-recess 14.
Of course, it will be understood that changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and that these are intended to be included therein.
What I claim is:
1. The combination in a derrick of a foot port-ion, comprising a lower stationary part having an upwardly projecting ball; a derrick-mast and boom-supporting upper part, having a downwardly projecting socket received on the aforesaid ball; a concentric wall around the base of the ball, providing an oil recess, into which the rim of the socket can dip, and means for holding the ball and socket as aforesaid, operatively together, said last-mentioned means comprising a collar in bolted together parts, which surrounds the aforesaid wall and further surrounds with bearing fit the outside of the socket.
2. The combination with a supporting member, of a derrick member thereon and a foot for the derrick member, comprising relatively movable parts secured respectively to the members, one of said parts having a ball portion and a wall surrounding the same, the other part comprising a socket that receives the ball portion and operates between the same and the Wall and means engaging both of said parts for holding them in assembled relation While permitting their relative movement.
3. The combination With a supporting member, of a derrick member thereon and a foot for the derrick member, comprising relatively movable parts secured respectively to the members, one of said parts having a ball portion and a Wall surrounding the same, the other part comprising a socket that receives the ball portion and operates between the same and the Wall, and a collar surrounding the Wall and ball portion and bridging the joint between them.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
