Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5,1913.
Application led September 10, 1912. Serial No'. 719,581.
' l To' all whom; t may concern.'
Beitknown-that I, WILLIAM J. BARNETT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at`v Richmond. in the 1 county of'I-Ienrico and same the hand cannot be broug t into convment of the handle in opposite1 tact with the blades or the contacts in any possible manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple and efcient means for locking the switch blades in either of the two contacting positions or in a neutralposition between the contacts.
Furtherl objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accom anying drawing which is a part of this app ication, and in which Figure l is a perspective view. l Fig. 2 is d a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation with parts broken away.
In the specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein there is shown al switch consisting of a base 1 having contact terminals 2 and 3 mounted thereon adjacent opposite ends. The center of the base has `secured thereto suitable pivoting ears 4 to .which are pivoted the knife blades 5. These blades are connected together by a bridge piece 6 from which rises a pair of pivoting ears 7 adapted to receive the extension 8 of the handle 9. This extension has an angularly iattened end 10 which is vadapted to engage the cross piece 6 .to limit the move- `rections, the-handle -being pivoted between ears by means of a bolt 11.
Covering the base and secured to the support upon which the base is mounted is an arcuate casin 12 having a slot 13 formed in its face which slot extends approximately throughout the curve of the casing and is provided with lateral extensions or notches 14, 15 and 16. These notches are adapted to receive the. handle and to lock the switch blades in engagement with the contacts 2 Copies of this patent may be obtained for or 3 or in a neutral position between the l two sets of contacts as is shown in Fig. 2.
Extending around the inner side of. the face of the casing 12 is a guiding strip 17 between which is slidably mounted an arcuate bar 18 of insulating material. This bar is normally projected across the slot 13 by 'means of springs 19 as shown so that when the handle is in one of the notches the bar will be across the slot thereby preventing the insertion of any tool for tampering with the switch.
What is claimed is j 1. In combination a knife switch, a casing covering the same and provided with a slot having lateral extensions, a handle pivotally connected to the blade Lof the switch and adapted for lateral movement thereon, said handle, operating in the slot and adapted to move into the lateral notches for'locking the same.' y
2. In combination a knife switch, an insulating casing mounted thereover and provided with an arcuate slot having lateral notches, a handle pivoted to the blade of the switch and adapted to operate in the slot and to move in the notches and means for closing the slot and holding the handle in one of the notches. 3.l In combination a knife switch, an insulating casing mounted thereover and provided with an arcuate slot having lateral notches, a handle pivoted tothe blade of the switch andl adapted to operate in the slot and to move in the notches and spring actuated means for closing the slot and holding the handle in one of the notches.
f1. In combination a double knife switch, an insulating casing covering the same, said casing having a slot provided with a lateral extension, a handle pivoted to the blades of the switch and adapted to` operate in said slot and extension, means for limiting movement of the handle, a. slidably mounted bar arranged in and conforming to the casing and springs for, projecting said bar across the slot, said bar adapted to hold the handle in one of the lateral extensions.
In testimonyjwhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
