INVENTUM R'l'hBEYrW-amm MRem,
ATTORNEYS NT FUFQ.
ALBERT W. HENNING, OF NEVTARK, NEW JERSEY.
JEWELRY.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. HENNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of TEssex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Jewelry; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention herein set forth has reference to a novel finger-ring, cuff-button, or similar article of ewelry which is provided with an interchangeable or removable plate adapted to carry a monogram, emblem, jewel, or other decorative feature.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel removable or interchangeable plate for finger rings and similar articles of jewelry, with a novel construction of means for locking the said plate to the article of jewelry to which it is applied, in a secure manner, so that accidental displacement or removal of the same is eliminated.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly evident from the following detailed description of the said invention.
,Vith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel removable or interchangeable plate for articles of jewelry and the locking means therefor hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specication, and then nally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specication.
Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 689,124.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top view of a nger ring provided with the novel construction of interchangeable or removable plate secured thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and F ig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2, looking upwardly. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical crosssection, taken on line 4-4 in said Fig. l, said view being drawn upon an enlarged scale; Fig. 5'is a view similar to Fig. 4, but illustrating the locking means in its uulocked position and the interchangeable or removable plate removed from the ring; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section, taken on line 6 6 in said Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow Fig. 7 is a plan View of the inner side of the removable or interchangeable plate; and Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the same, said section being taken on line 8-8 in said Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a vertical cross-section, similar to Fig. 4, but illustrating the removable or interchangeable plate provided with a jewel-setting and a jewel.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the herein-above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character l indicates the ringbody, or the body of any other article of jewelry, to which it is desired to apply the present invention. rIhe upper portion of said ring-body l is provided with a part 2 formed with a suitable opening 3 for the reception of a depending flange or skirtportion of a removable and interchangeable plate, to be hereinafter more fully described. The arch 4 of said ring-body l, which forms with the portion 2 a chamber, is provided with a countersunk portion 5, said portion 5 being formed with an opening 6 which provides a bearing for a pivot-stud 7, the head 8 of which resides in said countersunk portion 5, in such a manner so as to expose the said head 8 on the inner side of said arch 4 of the ring-body l. The said l ti EIL-stl exposed surface ot said head 8 is provided with recesses 9, or a slot, for the reception of a suitable tool, such as a Spanner-key or screw-driver, whereby said pivot-stud 7 may be turned in its bearing. Said pivotstud i is 'further provided, at its inner or upper end with a reduced extension or rivet-portion 10, and secured upon the said pivot-shui, by means et said reduced eXtension or rivet-portion 10, is a latch-member or turn-button 11, which is provided with oppositely extending arms 12, which form the movable members of the locking means l'er securing said plate in its assembled relation upon said ring-body, the said arms 12 pos"sing preferably a certain amount of resiliency or spring` with relation to the main body otl said latch-member or turnbutton 11.
rl`he reterence-character 13 indicates the novel construction et the interchangeable or removalfale plate, the tace or exposed surface oil which may be provided. with an engraving, etching', or other Yl'orm ot' embellishment or ornamentation; or, it may be provided with a settingv l-t for securing thereon one or more ewels 15 or other ornamental elements. The said plate 13 is provided upon its under side with a downwardly eX- tending annular l'lange or shirt 16, the same beine; ottset 'from the marginal edges of said plate, so as to provide, at said marginal edges, a rim-portion 17 being adapted to engage with and to be seated upon the hereinabove mentioned seat formed by the upper marginal surit'ace ot' the portion 2 of the ring-body. Said flange or skirt 16 is adapt.- ed to be received and telescope into said opening oit the said chambered portion 2 ot the ring-body, and suitably connected Vwith said flange or skirt 1G, and extending' inwardly is a rim or ledge-portion 18, said rim or ledge-portion 1S being provided with a pair of latch-lugs 19, which are positioned opposite or across from each other. llach latch-lug' 19 is provided, at each lateral end or side thereof, with notched or cutaway portions 20, which form at each side ot said latch-lugs 19 outwardly projecting; guide-lingers 21, said guide-lingers beingl inclined downwardly so as to provide an inclined guiding surface tor both lifting and guiding the resilient arms 12 of said latch-memb-er or turn-button 11 into their holding,v engagement with the upper surface ot said latch-lugs 19, when the said latchmember or turn-button 11 is turned, thereby lockingl the said plate 3 in its assembled relation with said ring-body 1.
'lhe advantage of the herein-above described arrangement is that when the latchmember or turn-button 11 is turned into engagement with said latch-lugs 19, the arms 12 oit the former being slightly lifted at their engaging ends, tend to create a spring-like tension due to the resilience oil? said arms 1,2 so as to draw the said. plate 3 down and seat the rim-portion 1T ezt the same firmly upon the seat oit the ehambered portion of the ring-body 1. and also at the same time firmly retain the plate 5:3 in its attached relation to said ring-body, as will be clearly evident from an inspection oit the several iigiinfes ot the drawings.
l do not limit the shape or desipjn ot the plate, or its peripheral conguration, to any particular shape or outline, as it is evident that in such respect the same may be subject to a wide variation.
l am also aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and coinbinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details et the construction of the same, without departing 'from the scope of my present invention, as described in the accompanying specification, and as delined :in the clauses of the claim appended thereto. Hence, l do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as set forth in the foregoing' speciiication, nor do l conin-ei myself to the exact. details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated. in the accompanying` drawings.
