UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July ft2, i913.
Application filed July 2, 1912. Serial No. 707,316.
To all who/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. Roninrrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Union and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful linprovenients in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding uinbrellas and the object of the invention is to provide a cheaply constructed, durable, and eliicient structure of this type in which the rib may be folded so that the device inay be packed in a sin all compass.
ri. further object of the invention is the provision of novel ineens for locking the telescopeifl parts of the handle or stall in extended or telescoped position.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which fornis a part of this application, and in which 1- lfigure l is a side elevation of the stall' showing a single rib runner and spreader thereon. l? Q is a detail longitudinal view through the staff, llig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view through the rib on an enlarged scale. Fig. il; is a perspective view of the unibrella in folded position.
ln the specific embodiment of the invention, as illustrated herein, the stall' is constructed of two parts l and Q, the latter telescoped within the forn'ier and being provided with. a split end 3 in which a wedge 4. is adapted to operate. This wedge is carried by a rod 5 which slides in the portion Q and is provided with a headed button 6 operated in the bayonet slot 7, by which ineans the wedge may be held in operative position with the split end sgread :in the section l. Tt will therefore be understood how the section 2 .may be held rigidly to section l ,in either extended or telescoped position.
The section l has secured thereto the ordinary rib pivoting i'neinber 8 upon which the ribs 9 are pivoted. The ribs 9 are cach forined in two sections Al0 and ll, the foriner having the offset end l2 which carries a clainp or guide 13 in which the lower or outer section l1 is adapted to slide, the oiset end producing a shoulder7 as shown at le, to hold the section 1l against inoveinent, as will be hereinafter des fibed. Secured to the inner terininal of the section ll is a clainp or guide ineinber l?) to the lower end of which is pivoted the spreader ineniber it). This spreader is in turn connected to the runner 1T and carries adjacent the end which is pivoted to the clamp, a heel i8 which is adapted to bear upon the under side of the oilset end l2 so as to hold the end of the sect-ion 'll depressed into engagement with the shoulderl lll. llilhen the runner is moved downwardly over 'the stall', this heel l@ will be moved out of engagement with the ol'lset portion l2 and the section ll will be telcscoped on to the section l0.
lVhat is claimed is ll. .ln a folding umbrella, a staff, a twopart rib pivoted thereto, one of said parts haring' an offset end, guide inenibers carried by the offset end and the opposite section or part, and adapted to slidably receive the other part, said offset end forming a shoulder, a runner, a stretcher ineinber pivotcd to the runner and to the guide ineinber on the opposite part, and ineans carried by the stretcher for drawing the end of said opposite part behind the shoulder.
2. ln a folding umbrella, a stall', a twopart rib pivoted thereto, the inner part having an oi'l'set outer Vterniina adapted to forni i shoulder against which the outer section or part is adapted to abut, a guiding ineinb r carried by the ofi'sct terminal of the inner part and adapted to receive the outer part, a. guiding nicniber carried by the outer part and adapted to receive the inner part and a spreader ineinber pivoted to the last named guide nieinber and having a cani to engage the offset end of the inner iart whereby the inner terminal of the outer part will be forced into engagement with the shoulder.
ln testiinony whereof l allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
