To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, lwlnnnnnr diocesan, a citizen of Denmark, and a resident ot Brownsville, in the county ot Cameron and State of Texas, have invented a new and lmproved Hair-Pin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved hairpin ont a type adapted to automatically secure itself in position on the hair.

lt has been found in the ordinary hairpin ot the bitureated' type, that when not securely placed in the hair, it is very lilrely to jar or slip out and get lost. This is enceed ingly disagreeable, especially it the hairpin is ot considerable value.

lt is therefore an object ot this invention' to provide means on the hairpin itselt which will automatically engage a portion ot the hair and grip the same, so as to secure the hairpin in position on the hair Without danger oit getting lost. This and further ob jects, together with the construction and combination ont parts, will be more Tully described hereinafter and particularly set torth ln the claim.

Reterring more particularly to the separate parts ot this invention as embodied in the torms shown in the drawings, it will be seen that in litige. l and 2 is illustrated a comb l oit the bilfurcated type, having tines 3, the inner edges ot which converge toward -each other trom the outer point olf the tines trated in Figs. l and 2 is shownas embodying a supplementary biturcated locking member a, having spring tines 5 and ti corresponding to the tines 3 and adapted to cooperate therewith to grip a portion ot the hair between the contacting surtaces and entrap the same, so as to secure the pin in position in the hair. llt will be noted in this torni that the spring tines and 6 are arched at 7, in one direction, and at 8 in the oppo site direction, so that the ends ol" the spring tines, indicated at 9, diverge away lrom the tines 3, whereby the hair can readily enter between the tines 8 and the tines 5 and ti.

ln the form shown in l*1 igs. 1 and 2, the hair-entrapping or locking member fl -is shown as comprising a single sheet ont metal secured in any well known manner to the body of the hairpin l, as by means ot rivets 10 passing through alined openings in the hairpin and the member 1l, and also by providing a tongue ll on the member ll, which is bent or deired around the bridge or arch ot the pin l, so as to grip opposite :laces ot the pin, and thus further secure the locking member d to the pin.

the hair-entrapping or locking member d is shown as being termed integral with the pin l, and bent over, as clearly illustrated in lig. 5, so that the tines thereot correspond to the tines on the pin and. coperate therewith to entrap a sudicient quantity ot hair to loch the pin in position in the hair. @therwise this pin conitorms to the torm shown in Figs. l and. 2.

lt will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and' emcient hairpin, which can be readily inserted in the hair, and when once inserted, will grip a portion otu the hair, so that it cannot be shaken out or lost in any way whatsoever'.

While ll have shown two embodiments ot my invention, ll do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modihcations which may come within the scope ol the appended claim. i

pair of tines corresponding to said firstmentioned tines and extending respectively in juxtaposition thereto, said last-mentioned tines being arched at a plurality of points to contact.with said first-mentioned tines and to form arched spaces between said firstmentioned and last-mentioned tines adapted 4 to entrap hair, whereby said pin may be secured to a body of hair, the corresponding tines of keach pair coperating with each 10 other to hold' the hair between them.
