CURTAIN ROLLER. No. 278,884. Patented June 5,1883.
h. 0 m N E V N T1 WITNESSES 2 UNITED STATES CLEMENT C. CLAIVSON,
or NEWARK, NEW JEEsEY.
CURTAIN-ROLLER.
, SPECIFICATION forming T 0 all whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, CLEMENT G. CLAwsoN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Rollers; and I "do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification,
and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a curtain fastened to my improved roller. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the roller, showing the several parts of the same sepa rated; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to curtain-rollers; and it consist-s in the improved construction and combination'of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the curtain, and B the cylindrical wooden roller. In manufacturing this roller two longitudinal incisions, C and D, are made from the outside, at right angles to each other, through the entire length of the roller, said incisions meeting each other at a depth in the roller slightly less than one-half the radius of the same, severing a strip,E, V-shaped in crosssection, and forming a V shaped recess, F. The one, D, of these incisions extends a short dis tance farther into the roller than the other, forming a longitudinal kerf or groove, G, extending the entire length of the roller.
\Vhen the curtain is to be inserted its inner end, H, is folded tranversely at the same dispart of Letters Patent No. 278,884, dated June 5, 1883. Application filed March I0, 1883. (No model.) 7
tance from its outer edge as the depth of incision D and groove G, and the crease I thus formed is inserted into groove G and pressed down and held in the same by means of a wooden or metallic strip, J, which fits in the groove, whereupon the strip E is placed in recess F, the inner portions of the curtain being clamped between the two inclined sides of the recess and strip, and the strip secured by means of nails K, passing through the inner edge of the strip into the point of the recess. In this manner the end of the curtain will be securely held by the fiat strip J and by strip E, and there will only be a very slight strain upon the nails, as the strain of the weight of the curtain comes obliquely upon the nails, and is divided upon the flat strip and the sides of the wedge-shaped strip.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The herein-described curtain-roller, having longitudinal incisions C and D at right angles to each other, forming V-sha'ped recess F,
groove G, and V-shaped strip E, and flat strip J, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. 2. The combination of the roller B, having longitudinal V-shaped, recess F and groove G, curtain A, folded at its inner end to form a crease, I, wedge-shaped strip E, and flat strip J, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLEMENT o. oLAWsoX.
