Obviously, the driving pulley 20 may be turned by the crank 22 as shown or in any other suitable manner.
To provide a suitable index by means of which any item or account entered upon the record strip may be readily found, an index line 2li is drawn lupon the face of the record strip from one end t-o the other thereof and diagonally across said strip. In the casing cover 2 adjacent to the opening 3 is a second opening 25 beneath which an extension 2.6 of the table 5 extends to support the record strip beneath said opening. The several items or accounts entered upon the record strip may hear index markings or numbers as indicated aty 2,7 and an indicator plate Q8 is provided with similar in` dicator markings or numbers placed opposite graduations 29 which extend to the edges of a slot 30 in said plate through which slot the inclined or diagonal index line Q4 on the record strip may be seen.
As the record strip 'is wound from one Winding roll to the other. the. index line 2l as seen through .the slot 30 in the indicator plate, will travel along said slot owing to its diagonal position upon the strip. `When said index line registers with one of the graduations 29 the particular item or account bearing the index marking 2l' Which corresponds to the like index marl; opposite said graduation will show through the opening 3. The operator therefore runs the reC- ord strip along until the index line registers with the index to the particular item or account that he desires and thus a. very siniple and convenient index mechanism is provided for'the record strip.
The indicator plate 28 is held in position beneath the opening Q5 by means of screws 3l en a ino* -lon itudinal slots 3Q at the ends of the plate and guide ribs or tongues 33 on the plate project downward therefrom in engagement with each edge of the record strip -so that should there be any lateral movement of the strip as it travels past the plate, said plate, by the engagement of the ribs 33 with its edges, will move laterally with it and thus maintain the accurate relation of the index line Sie to the graduations on thev plate. Obviously the said indicator plate may be otherwiseheld against movement with the travel of the record strip and so that it will freely move laterally with the strip, any suitable means 1seing provided for accrniplisiiing this pose maintaining the relation plate and strip. l
Changes in the condition the pheie will cause the paper recordstrip expand and contract, materially, changing its length and causing it to Wrinkle. This expansion or contraction may notbe the same along each edge of the strip and it would cause an uneven Winding ot the strip upon the rolls. Undue expansion or contraction would also change the position of the index line relatively to the graduation on the indicator plate and thus said line would not correctly perform its function. To prevent any uneven expansion or contraction and to hold the edges of the record strip smooth and straight, a strip or tape 34 preferably of fabric or other material which is not greatly a'ected by changes of teni! peratur'e is glued along each edge of the record strip upon the lower or inner side thereof. These strips or tapes take' the strain of driving the record strip, giving the paper strength and preventing its being Worn or torn along its edges. These tapes also hold the edges straight and smooth so that the wrinkling of the paper will not affeet the 'accurat even Winding of the record strip. e
Obviously, the index mark on the paper may lie a continuous unbroken straight line,
.as shown or it may be an irregular or broken line, and other changes in the construction and arrangement ot' the parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of 'my invention. I do not. therefore limit myself to the particular forni or construction shown.
What l claim as my invention is:;-
l. An autographic register having in coinbination a record strip provided with a diagonal index line extending longitudi nally thereof, means for causing longitudinal travel of said record strip, a member supported adjacent to said strip having indicia to indicate pre-determined portions of said strip and so placed with respect toV said diagonal line that when said line intersects the line of arrangement of said indicia and coincides with an index thereof, that portion of the record strip to which said index refers will be in a pre-determined position.
.fnrautographic register having in coinbination winding rolls. a record stripI adapted to be vvound from one to the other of' said rolls, said strip being provided with an in dex line extending .diagonally aci the same throughout its length, and a member provided with indicia referring to predetermined portions ofsaid strip arranged transversely of said diagonal line and strip to indicate by the coincidence of said lines and one of the indicia, that the port-ion of the strip indicated b1," said indes; in 2,2'
