Description

G. J. NASH.
DRAFT GEAR.
UNITED STAT E PATENT CFFTCE;
CHARLES J'. NASH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNIVERSAL DRAFT GEAR ATTACHMENT 00., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-GE A 12 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J. NASH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for attaching the coupler bar to the yoke of a draft gear for railway cars, and it consists of a structure as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail side view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a draft gear; Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of a draft gear; and Fig. 8 is a plan view of one of the tiller blocks interposed between the coupler and the yoke.
The yoke comprises a pair of longitudinal members 10, 11, between the forward ends of which the butt of the coupler 12 is received and to which the latter is pivotally attached.
A pair of filler blocks 13, 14, is attached one to the upper and the other to the lower face of the butt of the coupler, by means of a rivet 15. Each of these filler blocks is provided with an aperture 16, and this aperture is counterbored from the outer face of the block, as shown at 17. Each of the arms of the yoke is provided with an instanding circular boss 18, 19, adapted to fit within the counterbores of the blocks; and these arms are also apertured on the axes of the bosses 18, 19, to receive the pin 20 which sets through a suitable aperture in the butt of the coupler and is provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

a head at each end, as shown. The butt of the coupler is transversely recessed across its upper and lower faces, as shown at 21, 22, and the filler blocks 13, 14, are provided at their forward ends with instanding ribs 23, 2 1, which fit within these recesses. The outer faces of the blocks 18, 141-, are channeled, as shown at 25, these channels being curved to the form of an arc struck from the center of the apertures 16, and the forward ends of the side arms of the yoke are lipped inwardly, as shown at 26, 27, to lit within these channels.
In assembling the parts the filler blocks are applied loosely to the arms of the yoke, the coupler is inserted laterally between these blocks, and the pins 15 and 20 are then inserted and properly headed up. In order to permit the insertion and heading of the pin 15, the arms of. the yoke are apertured, as shown at 28, 29. hen thus assembled the coupler is free to swing laterally about the bosses 18, 19, and the stresses incident to either pulling or hufling are transmitted from the coupler to the yoke through the filler blocks without subjecting the pins to material strain.
I claim as my invention- In combination, a draw-bar having lateral recesses, a yoke comprising a pair of parallel arms each having an inturned end, filler blocks engaging the inner face of the arms and being channeled to receive their inturned ends, and having bosses for engaging the recesses of the draw-bar.
