MoRTz- ALT-MAN, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND,
Letters Patent No. 106,7 61, dated August 30, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoRrrz ALTMAN. of the city and county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Neck-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to' be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', sufivtral section throughonevot' the wings ot' the neck-tie.
Figure 3 is a fronttview of' the clasp;
Figure 4, a rear view ofthe same;
Figures 5, 6, and 7 are sections; and l Figure 8, a rear view; all showing modifications in the construction of the clasp, as will be hereinafter more particularly referred to. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in .the several Igures.
The'natureof my invention consists- First, in providing the 4tiewith a lining of calf,'an1i securing the same to the material composing the front of the tie, by simply cementing the edges and pressing the parts together, whereby a fine appearance is imparted, and all sewing is dispensed with.
In the drawinga represents the central portion of the tie; b b', the wings; and c, the clasp.
The tie is made ot any suitable material, `as silk,
satin, linen, paper, Stc., and isprovided withl a lining, d, preferably of calt'. The lining` is attached to the frontsimply by pressure around the edges in a press adapted for the purpose. e represents the pressed surface, forming aborder all around the wings. This pressure `causes the material composing the front' ot the tie to raise up, as shown in tigs. l'and 2, giving a iine, finished appeal'- ance. By this mode ot`- securing the parts together, the necessity of cutting the .front to an exact shape is dispensed with, as the uneven edge is turned under and covered by the lining. Sewing being entirely dispensed with, a great saving in the manufacture is effee-ted. i v
-I.wi1l now describe the preferred construction of the clasp, and will afterward refer to several modifications thereof', which may be made and used with more or less success.
c represents the front of the clasp, which may be struck up into any suitable shape, and with or without an ornamental design. i
fis the inner portion or plate, which is secured in place by turning down the upper and lower edges of the outer part, as shown in iig. 4, the central portion a of' the neck-tie being contined between the two l plates.
To the inner part f is hinged a plate, g, provided with a catch at the lower end, which engages with the edge ofthe frame.
1n the plate gis anopening, h, of such size and vshape at the bottom as totit over al collar button, while its upper part is narrow, to receive only the shank. r,lhis will be readily understood by refel'ence Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the plate g is rigidly attached to the upper .part of the frame, its lower end being entirely free.'
Fig. 8 is aback View of this modiiication.
The plate g' may be hingedto the front part of the clasp, which is turned back for the purpose, as shown in tig. 6, instead ot' to the back plate.
:In tig. 7 the clasp is s hown as consisting simply ot' afront part, c, and the bingedplate g, the edges of part c being bent overto conne the material composing the tie.
The tie may be 'applied to the collar-button with the' plate g, either unclasped or fixed. It is readily applied, either' side up, and afterward adjusted, and can bedetached without the least trouble.
Added to the features ot' economy in the manufacture, and ready attachment and4 detachment, this tie possesses the'advantage of' remaining'in position, presenting a good appearance.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described neck-tie, a, b b', with a lining, d, attached asdescribed, and provided'with a clasptor tasteliing, constructed 'substantially as speciied.
. To the above speciiication of my invention I have signed my name, this 23d day of July, 1870, in the presence' of two subscribing witnesses.
MORITZ ALTMAN.
