Patented J My 8, 1913.
Application filed'J'une 13. 1911. Serial No. 632,854.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN \V. lto'r- ZELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jack son and State of hilissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. l-landles for Loose-Leaf Files; and I do doclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of referenee marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to a handle for loose leaf files, and has for its object to provide a device whereby such files may be carried, or easily and quickly removed from a shelf or replaced thereon; the device being adapted for use either with a partially tilled or completely filled file. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective View of a loose lea'f file, equipped with a handle constructed according to my invention. Fig. II a sectional view through the tile and binding post, a handle being mounted on the posts. Fig. HT is a detail View 01 the handle.
Referring more in detail to the parts: 1 designates a loose lea't file comprising the covers 2, posts 2), which are adapted to pro ject loosely through apertures in the covers, and tluunb nuts -fl: which are adapted to thread onto the ends of the posts 3 to bind the covers together.
5 designates sheets, having apertures therein, through which the posts 3 are projected, to bind same between the covers. As a rule the files are oi substantial size and considerable weight, especially when filled or partially filled with the sheets 5.
In using the file's, the clerk must carry same to and from a vault or other storage place, and. it is often necessary to handle a number of such files daily. \Vhen the files are filled and stored away, it is often necessary to bring them out to look up matters the distance between the posts 3, and the handle apertures being adapted to receive said posts. The handle is preferably cut from a flat piece of leather, so that the arms may have substantial strength, but will not be sulliciently thick to take up much space when applied to the file. In using the handle while the file is in daily use, the arms are carried on the posts 3, as illustrated in Fig. l the handle being removed While new sheets are being placed in the file and replaced on the post when the file is half full, after which the remaining sheets are placed on top of the handle arms, so that when the tile is full the handle will project from near the center thereof.
It is apparent that with my improved handle the file maybe carried, or taken -from or replaced in a row of files much more easily than it? it were necessary to grasp the body of the tile.
llaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by LettersPatent is 1. The combination o'l a loose lea't file, having binding posts adapted to be projected through the apertures in the leaves and uniting same in a book, a handle having arm members adapted to be projected between the leaves oi the book and anchored on the posts, and having a grip portion integral with the arms and projected from the rear end ol. the book, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a loose leaf file having binding posts, oi a handle portion having arms provided with apertures, said arms being spaced apart a distance equal to the space between the posts and being projected thereover, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination With a loose leaf file posts and being adapted for receiving said comprising topand bottom covers, and posts, substantially as set forth. 10
binding posts extending therethrough in In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature fixed relation to each other, of a holder comin presence of two witnesses. 5 prising a flat body member having laterally FRANKLIN W. ROTZELL.
turned end arms having apertures therein, Witnesses:
said apertures being spaced apart a distance MYRTLE M. J AoKsoN,
equal to the space between said binding ARTHUR W. CAPS.
