To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MILTON W. ALEX- AYNDER and JAMES WV. BRADSHAW, each a citizen of the United States, the said MILTON IVJALEXANDER residing at Albany, county of Albany, and State ofNew York, and the said JAMES W. BRADSHAW residing at Troy, county of Itensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and' subsequently claimed.

Reference may be had to, the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of a brush made in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the recessed side of the brush-back. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bristle-supporting pad provided with an edge-binding of fibrous material ready for insertion in the recessed back. Fig. 4c is a view in cross-section on an enlarged scale of a portion of the bristle-supporting pad.

The invention relates to a type of toiletbrush in which the bristles are supported by an elastic pad or sheet which is inserted and secured in a recess in the brush-back, and preferably so confined by the walls of the recess that the pad is held in a buckled position so as to present an outwardly curved or converted surface from which the bristles divergently project.

The principal object of the present invention is to more effectively and securely hold the edges of the pad within the recess in the brush-back.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, represents the brush-back formed with a recess, 2, of a form and size adapted to receive the bristle-supporting pad, 3, to which the bristles, 4, are attached. The bristles may be attached to the pad, 3, in any known manner. The pad, 3, is-formedof elastic material,

preferably soft rubber, and is of such a size that when its edge has been forced into the recess, 2, in the brush-back, the pad will be buckled or curved outwardly, presenting a convexed outer surface from which the bristles divergently project, as shown in Fig. 1. The walls of the recess, 2, may be of any form suitable for properly supporting the edge of the pad. In the drawings a pre-' ferred form of recess is shown, the wall of which is undercut to form a groove, 5, well adapted to receive the inserted edge of the pad. The edge of the 'pad is provided with a binding of fibrous material, and the bound edge of the pad is glued or cemented t0 the wall of the recess in the brush-back, whereby the pad'is securely retained in position in the brush.

We have shown the pad covered with woven fabric, 6, which fabric is in the pre ferred form of the invention cemented to the rubber pad and extends over the edge of the pad to form a binding therefor. The pad is also shown provided with an edgebinding of threads of fibrous material applied to the edge of the pad in the form of over-edge stitching, said threads forming a binding for the edge of the pad, and also serving to more firmly secure the fabric, 6, to the pad along its edge. If desired the fabric may be omitted, and the binding formed by the over-edge stitching alone relied upon to insure the necessary adherence of the edge of the pad to the walls of the recess in the brush-back. The pad may be provided wit-h an edge-binding of fibrous material in any known manner.

In assembling the parts of the brush, a coating of glue or cement is applied to the walls of the recess or to the bound edge of the pad, or both, and the pad is forced into the recess until its edges are firmly seated therewithin. Vhen the glue or cement has hardened, the pad will be securely held to the brush-back and within the recess by the adherence of its fibrous edge-binding to the walls of the recess.

i The brush-back may be made of wood or other'material of which brush-backs are ordinarily made.

l/Vhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A brush comprising a brush-back provided with a recess, and a bristle-supporting pad of elastic material secured within saidrecess, said pad having a fibrous edge-binding adherent to the walls of said recess.

2. A brush comprising a brush-back provided with a recess, and a bristle-supporting pad confined within said recess, said pad having an edge-binding or woven fabric overstitched with fibrous thread, said binding being adherent to the walls 01": said recess.

3. A brush comprising a brush-back pro- Vided' with a recess formed with an undercut grooved wall, and a bristle-supporting pad of elastic material confined in curved form within said recess, the edge of said pad being bound with fibrous thread stitched thereover, said thread being adherent to the walls of said groove.

4. A brush com-prising a brush-back provided with a recess formed with an undercut grooved wall, and a bristle-supporting pad of elastic material confined in curved form within said recess, the edge of said pad being bound with fibrous thread stitched thereover and exposed on the outer side of the pad, said thread where exposed on the outer side of said pad being adherent to the undercut wall of the recess.

5. A brush comprising a brush-back provided with a recess and a bristle-supporting pad of elastic material secured within said recess, said pad having a fibrous thread stitched over its edge and adherent to the wall of said recess, said thread being confined to the edge-portions of the pad.
