A TTORNEY AMANDA L. HARRIS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TRASH-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed August 13, 1912. Serial No. 714,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, AMANDA L. l'lAlilllS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful I-mprtwements in Trash- Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to trash burners, and more particularly to a device of that class which is adapted for burning the trash which usually accumulates about a house, and has for its principal object to provide a burner of simple and light construction, so that it may be carried to and from the place where the trash is to be burned, and when not in use may be stored in a kitchen or about a house. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
whereinz Figured is. a perspectii e view ofa trash burner constructed according to my invention. Fig; II is a-central vertical section of same. Fig. III is a perspective view of the burner, showing the draft door particularly opened and the cap spaced from the top of the burner body. Fig. IV is a detail view of part of the collar supporting leg.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates the burner body, which is preferably constructed ofsheet metal and is round in cross section, the ends being closed, and the body portion provided with ,legs 2 {or supporting the body above the grouhdu In-the side of the body, preferably a short distance above the bottom, is an opening 3, and at the sides of the opening are battens 4 between which the damper plate 5 adapted to slide, the damper being also preferably constructed of sheet metal and having side lips 6 turned outwardly and adapted for travelin vertical grooves '4' of the battens t. i
In the top of the body member is a cen tral aperture 8, and extending throughthe aperture is a collar 9 which depends within the body member and forms an annular space 10 at the top of the burner channel, the upper end of the'collar being projected upwardly a short distance from the top of the body to provide a The collar 9 is preferably permanently secured to the top of the body member by a. ring 11, which has its upper end riveted to the collar and has its lower end slit to form lips 111l, the lips 11' being bent laterally and overlying the top of the body member, and the lips 11 being also bent lateral, but at a lower level than the lips 11' so that they underlie said top. It is apparent that the ring may be secured to the collar before the latter-is projected through the top of the burner body, and that the lower lips may be bent afterthe collar is installed. I I
12 designates a cap preferably comprising a cylinder of a diameter to fit loosely over the projecting end of the flue collar, and having a top 13 also provided with a central aperture 14, and having a flue flange 15 surrounding the aperture, the aperture itself being covered by a screen 16, so that when the burner is in use and the cap 31 place a draft may be had through the cap, while the screen prevents the escape of pieces of burning paper, or the like. The
cap is also provided with a bail 17 by which.
itmay be lifted from and onto the burner. The ends of the bail preferably project through the sides of the cap and through :1
ring 18, which is contained within the cap and has an upturned flange 19 for holding the screen 16 in place. The burner body may also be provided with a bail 20 whereby the device inaybecarried from one-place coming separated when trash is beingburned therein. The burner may be placed in any of the rooms of a house and serve as a. wastebasket to collect pieces of paper or other trash, the compact construction making device not more unsightly than the. ordi nary wastebasket. When the burner is full it may be carried to a back yard or eaway, and the trash burned therein, the draft oor being raised route a umfiand provide lighting the sufficiently aCCBSS for contents of burner.
When the trash is burned within the body member, flame will rise into the annular space around the collar 9 and be confined within the burner, instead of passing up through the interior of the collar, thereby eliminating any objection to the burner on account of danger of the escaping flame niting the clothing of children playing about the burner.
When the cap is in place should pieces of burning or charred paper rise through the collar they will be caught by the screen cup and fall back into the burner, so that there is no tendency of the device to litter iho yard or endanger buildings on amount of burning trash escaping from the burner and being carried to the roofs of adjacent buildings.
It is apparent that the draft through the burner regulated ,by manipulating the door 5, that the burner is adapted for deetroyiug either loose or slow burning trash,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein anti desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A trash, burner comprising body member having admit opening in the side, near the bottom, a closed bottom, and an opening in its top; a damper plate for regulnting the of the draft opening; a 00.1 lar foyming an annular space in the upper portion of the body member and projected through the opening in the top of tlie hotly form a flue, and a cap adapted. for seating over the collar flue and having a Si ecned exit opening in its top.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
