The principal object of my invention is to provide a colony hover, which may be employed to take care of and successfully protect a large number of chicks in a room or colony house.
My device provides temperature controlling means, whereby the temperature may be automatically maintained at any desired and regulatable point. Moreover, my device is cheap to manufacture; economical in fuel consumption and simple and easy to operate.
The above objects and advantages have,
been accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is asectional elevation through the center of my hover. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, sectional elevation of my device, showing the d'amper and the upper part'of the control therefor. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation showing the lower part of the damper controlling means. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation showing the lower part of a modified formof damper controlling means. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, sectionalelevation of a modified form of damper arrangement.
In the drawings, 5 represents the stove of my device, which is preferably arranged for burning coal.
6 is the upper part of the combustion chamber of the stove, and 7 is the lower part thereof. These parts are preferably frustoconical in form and are united at their largest diameters near the center of the combustion chamber by a flange connection 8.
Beneath the fire pot is arranged the ash pit 9 of the stove, which is provided with a detachable door 51. This ash pit sets upon a base 10, which has its lower edge raised above the floor and is provided with a plurality of feet 11. The base 10 is partly filled. with asbestos 12, and beneath thls aswhich pass through the flange 8, down through the ash pit and through the bottom 13, thus securely holding the parts together. 7 15 are the grates of my stove, beneath which is arranged a suitable ash pan. Around the stove is disposed a flaring canopy 16, at the outer rim of which is preferably arranged a downwardly extending wall 17. The canopy is provided with a central aperture which slips over the canopy flange 18. This flange is arranged to set upon the edge of the upper part 6 of the combustion chamber and is provided with a suitable bail 19 by which the canopy may be raised from the stove by a rope 20, passing overv suitable pulleys 21, and thus be elevated while cleaning about the heater.
The upper part 6 of the combustion Chamber is provided with a suitable charging hole 22, hav ng a cover 23 fitted thereto. A sleeve '24 is also provided, over which is fitted the smoke or draft pipe 25. A draft opening 26 is also provided in the upper wall of the part 6. A damper chamber 27 is formed within the upper part of the part 6 by a damper box 28 secured against the side and upper walls of this part of the combustion chamber. This damper box extends over the area covered by the sleeve 24 and the draft opening 26, and is provided in its lower wall with an opening 29, which registers with the opening 26 in the top of theopen or close either of said openings. A rod 31 passes through the damper 30 and is provided with a hook or an eye at its upper end and connected with this hook is a damper lever 32, which is supported by means of a knife edge 33 resting upon a supporting member 34 carried on the upper face of the part 6. Connected with the outer end of the damper lever is a damper rod 35, Which extends down the outside of the combustion chamber and is connected at its lower end with the thermostat controlling means.
The thermostat controlling means comprises a disk thermostat 36 arranged beneath a suitable flange 37 carried by a thermostat arm 38. The arm 38 is preferably carried by the ash pit 9 of the heater and is preferably provided with an aperture 39 near its inner end through which the bestos is placed a bottom 13. beneath the thermostat arm 38 and supported by means of an adjusting bolt 41, which passes through the said lever and thermostat arm 38 and has an adjusting nut 42 at its upper end. The thermostat lever 40 extends out beneath the disk thermostat 36, and its inner end extends inwardly and is connected with the lower hook end of the damper rod 35. At the inner end of this thermostat lever is provided a weight 43, which keeps the outer end thereof constantly in contact with the disk thermostat 36.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the thermostat is arranged between the adjusting means and the base portion. In carrying out this form of thermostat, the arm 44 is provided with an ofiset, central portion 45 and is bent downwardly at its outer end 46 and lies in a plane below the inner end thereof. A flange 47 is provided near the outer end for the support of the disk thermostat 36. Arranged above the outer end 46 of the thermostat arm is the thermostat lever 48, which is bent so as to bring its inner, weighted end below the level of the inner end of the thermostat arm 44.. The adjusting screw 49 is arranged to pass through the outer ends of the thermostat arm 44 and thermostat lever 48, and is provided with a thumb nut 50, as in the other form.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the
. damper 51 is disposed over the opening 24 in the top of the part 6 and arranged to open and close this opening. The opening 29 in the damper box 28 is also provided in this form of device.
When the form of my device, shown in Figs. 1-4, is to be put into operation, the fire is started and the combustion chamber filled with coal. If the temperature is be low the desired point, the damper 30 will be adjusted so that it closes the draft opening 26 in the top of the upper part 6. When in this position, all the draft created through the pipe 25 will draw the air through the fire, opening 29 in the damper box, through the damper box and out of the pipe 25, thus giving the fire the maximum amount of draft and causing it quickly to reach the desired temperature. As the temperature is reaching the predetermined point, the disk thermostat 36 will start to expand and as it does so it will raise the inner end of the thermostat lever. This .will cause the damper 30 to he gradually be drawn in through the opening 26 and up through the pipe 25. Any gases formed in the combustion chamber will pass through the small opening provided in the damper.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 5, the damper 51 is down upon the opening 26 when the fire is started thus permitting all of the draft to act upon the fire. \Vhen the predetermined temperature has been reached, the damper 51 will be moved upwardly so as to uncover the openin 26. When the opening 26 is partially or w olly uncovered the source of the air going up the smoke pipe 25 will be divided and air will be taken into the damper box 28 through the combustion chamber of my stove provides a comparatively large reservoir for coal so that a much desired slow burning fire can be readily controlled therein. Moreover the converging side of the upper part 6' of this chamber reduces the relative size of the fiat top ortion and the eccentric arrangement of t e draft and fuel openings is such that there is no lost space and at the same time no disadvantages caused by the top being reduced in size. Another advantage resulting from in construction is that the heat is radiated rom the outer side of the frusto-conical combustion chamber against the flarin canopy and thence deflected upon the chicks. If the heat becomes too great the canopy, being adjustable, can be raised to any desired height above the stove and thus the temperature surrounding the chicks be additionally regulated. I
Obviously, some modification of the details herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I do not wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention,.

In a hover, the combination of al-base portion, an upper St0"e section above the base having-its widest part near the center of the stove and havingits sides converging upwardly and downwardly from the center, the flat top of the upper stove sec-' tion being formed with draft and fuel openings eccentrically arranged, a damper in the draft opening, a thermostaticdevice projecting, from the base portion and a vertical damper rod connected thereto, means connecting said damper and said rod and a vertically-movable canopy supported on the upper part of the upper stove section and centrally apertured so that the draft and fuel openings are located outside of the canopy.
4. In a hover, the combination of a base portion, a two-part combustion chamber, each part being substantially frusto-conical in form and the chamber having its greatest diameter near the center thereof, the fiat top of the same being formedwith draft and fuel openings eccentrically arranged, a
damper in the draft opening, a thermostatic device projecting from the base portion, a
vertical damper rod connected thereto, means cOnnecting said damper and said rod, and a canopy supported at the upper part of the chamber and centrally apertured so that thev draft and fuel openings are located outside of the canopy.

In a hover, the combination of a base portion, a combustion chamber having its greatest diameter near the center thereof, the sides of the same converging upwardly and downwardly from the center, the top of the chamber being formed with check draft and fuel. openings eccentrically arranged, a damper in the draft opening, a canopy supported at the upper part of the combustion chamber and centrally apertured so that the draft and fuel openings are located outside of the canopy, a thermostatic device projecting from" the base portion, a vertical damper rod extending upwardly therefrom and means connecting the damper and rod.
