CABLE CLIP.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 6, 1912. 1,065,107, Y I Patented June 17,1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ARTHUR BETTNEY, DECEASED, LATE OF NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND, BY SARAH ANN BETTNEY, ADMINISTRATRIX.
CABLE-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 6, 1912.
Patented June 17, 1913.
Serial No. 729,837.
To all whom- 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, SARAH ANN BETTNEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Nottingham, in the county of the said city, England, administratrix of the estate of HENRY ARTHUR BETTNEY, deceased, late a resident of the city of Nottingham, declare that he did invent new and useful Improvements in Cable- Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in haulage clips of the kind used in connection with wire ropes or cables and which are readily attachable to and detachable from the cable, and to and from a vehicle; the object of the present invention being improvements in the construction and arrangement of the clip cheeks and jaws, improvements in the means for and in the method of positively opening and closing the jaws, improvements in the means for and in the method of connecting the coupling hook to the clip handle whereby the pull of the vehicle always tends to increase the grip of the jaws upon the cable, the provision of means whereby the size of the jaw opening can be adjusted to grip different sized cables and improvements in the general construction and arrangement of the improved cable clip.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved clip with the front cheek removed. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the clip. Fig. 3 is a section of the cheeks showing the arrangement for adjusting the size of the jaw opening. Fig. 4 is an elevation of partor" the handle showing alternative means for connecting the handle to the coupling hook, and Fig. 5 is a section of the cheeks showing alternative means for opening the jaws.
In the clip shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the back cheek 1 has a jaw 2 and attached bearings 3 for an axle 4 which is parallel to the jaw. The front cheek 5 has a jaw 6, which corresponds in shape and position to the back jaw, and it is connected to the axle 4 by a boss or collar 7 which is loosely mounted on the axle a and is provided with a screwed pin 8 for a nut 9 which has a bearing in the cheek 5 and by which the distance between the jaws can be adjusted. The upper ends of the cheeks 1 and 5 are drilled to form loose bearings for an axle 10 which is at right angles to the axle 4 and upon which the handle 11 is mounted. The handle is provided with a cam or Wedge 12 which operates between the upper edges of the cheeks and in such a manner that when the wedge is forced between the cheeks the jaws are gripped upon the cable. The handle 11 is also provided with outside wedges 18 which are connected thereto by a cross bar 14 and are adapted to act upon the outside upper edges of the cheeks, whereby the jaws are positively opened when the handle is raised and are held open when the clip is being applied to the cable. The handle projects below the axle 10 and forms a short lever 15 to which the coupling hook 16 is connected v a link 17. The handle 11, the wedges 12 and 13, and the lever 15, are preferably made in one piece and the parts are so arranged that when the clip is attached to the cable and to the vehicle the pull acting through the hook 16 tends to increase the pressure of the jaws upon the cable and prevent slipping thereon.
In the modification shown in Fig. 1 the handle 11, wedges 12 and 13 are similarly arranged to the corresponding parts shown in Fig. 1 and the handle is fixed upon the axle 10 but there is no lever below the axle. Loosely mounted upon the axle 10 there is a pair of links 18, one on each side of the handle 11, and connected to the coupling hook by the link 17 The links 18 are shaped to form a ratchet tooth l9 and there is a ratchet pawl 20 pivotally mounted on the cross bar 1 1 for engagement with such tooth and by which the links 18 are held in contact with pins 21 on the handle boss. By means of this arrangement the handle 11 can be disconnected from the coupling hook and the clip be liberated from the cable if from any cause the pull upon the hook is too greatto be overcome by the attendant.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the bearings 3 for the axle are extended below the axle and drilled to receive springs 22 by Which the jaws are opened after the handle has been raised. This drawing also shows the jaws fitted with a renewable soft metal lining 23 which may be applied to any of the jaws shown in the drawings for preventing damage being done to the cable and insuring a good grip upon the cable.
