PORTABLE HANGER FOR HOIS-TING-TACKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Julie 15, 1920.
Application filed June 18, 1919. Serial No. 305,006.
7 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS lA'rTnnsoN, of the city of Hamilton, in the county of Wentworth, Province of ()ntario Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hangers for Hoisting-Tackle, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in portable hangers for hoisting tackle and the object of the invention is to devise a simple device which may be readily attached to a roof beam or like structure to form a means of connection for the hoisting tackle while lifting the load and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
The drawing represents a. side elevation of my hanger device attached to a portion of a beam.
1 imlicates a. pair of tongs comprising members 1 and 1" connected together by a. pivot bolt 2. The tong members 1 and l cross at the pivot point to form depending lever arms 3 and 4. The lever arm *1 is provided with a boss 5 having a central orifice 6 extending horizontally. T is an eye bolt extending through the orifice 6 provided at its outer end with a wing nut S screwed thereon. 9 is a tension spring which is connected to one end of the eye bolt T and extended at its opposite end through an orifice 10 in the lever arm 3. By this means the lever arms 3 and 4 are drawn together. It and 12 are jaw members comprising plat'e like portions 11 and 12* each having scrrated inner faces 11 adapted to engage each line of the beam 13. The serrations of the faces 11 are preferably ratchet shaped with the edges of the serrations projecting downward. The plates 11 and 12* are provided with lugs 14 and 15 through which and the upper end of the portions 1 and 1 extend pivot bolts 16 and 17. The jaw members I and 1 are provided with extra holes 18 through which a pivot bolt may extend in order to vary the size of the gripping portion of the tongs so as to engage the beam of greater or less width. The extreme lower ends of the lever arms 3 and 4 are provided with orifices 19 and 20 through which extend links 21 and 22. The lower ends of the links 21 and 22 converge together and are connected by :1 depending link 23 which is preferably a tapered link. The lower ends of the lever arms 3 and t below the oritices l9 and All are provided with handle extensions 24- and 25 by which the lever arms may be guided by the hands of the operator and drawn apart in order to release the upper ends of the tongs from the beam 13. it will be readily seen that :1 device such as l have described will be particularly useful in garages where it is lt.|illl'l(l to lift the r air or front end of an automobile. .\ll that is necessary to do is to pull the handle portions apart and insert the upper ends of the tongs at each side of the beams 13 so that the serrated faces of the plates 11? and 12 will be drawn into contact with the faces of the beam 13 by the tension of the spring 9. \Vhcu in this position the link 23 depends and the cable of the hoisting tackle may be either passed therethrough or a. pulley block forming part of the hoisting tackle may be hooked into ongagement with the link thereby forming a support for the tackle. \Vhen desired the hanger may be easily removed by manually drawing the portions 24 and 25 apart so as to release the tongs from the beam.
From this i'lcscription it will be seen that I have devised a very simple device which will serve as a hanger for hoisting tackle. which may be readily removable so as to be portable from place to place or be readily removable so as to be attached to one place or another in the building in which manner it is to be used, and such as will be simple and cheap to manufacture.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. A hanger device for hoisting tackle comprising a pair of tongs having gripping jaws at their upper ends adapted to engage the sides of the beam. an eye bolt extending freely through one of the lower portions of the tongs, an adjusting nut screwed onto the outer end of the eye bolt against the lower portion of the tongs, a tension spring connecting the eye of the eye bolt with the other lower portion of the tongs, and :1 depending loop device connected to the lower portion of the tongs.
2. A hanger comprising a pair device for hoisting tackle, of pivotally connected tongs providing gripping laws above the pivot, having serrations on their opposed faces and handle portions below the pivot, adjustable tension means extending between and rersilientl eonneeting;- the handle portions of the tongs and normally tending to draw the handle portions and the gripping jaws of the tongs toward eaeh other, and a loop devlee suspended from the said handle portions.
