To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Gn ronn JAMIESON BISHOP, of Bundy Station, Wanganella, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, station carpenter, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping Devices for Use in Raising and Lowering Pipes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gripping device for use in raising and lowering pipes and the like which will grip a pipe or the like more or less tightly according to the strain applied to a hauling gea connected to the same.
The invention has been devised particularly for use in raising and lowering pipes of Artesian and sub-Artesian bores but it will be equally efficient for gripping pipes, rods or posts when raising or lowering them in lift or mine shafts and like places where they have to be moved while being held vertically.
The improved device briefly consists of a movable jaw and astationary jaw or two movable jaws which are designed to embrace the pipe to be raised or lowered and are constructed and arranged in combination with the hauling gear so that the movable jaw or movable jaws bear against and grip the pipe when a strain is applied to the hauling gear.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference will now be had to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings wherein Figure l is a view in side elevation of the improved device in position on a pipe. Fig. 2 is a view in plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in sectional elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a View in plan of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view in sectional elevation of the device shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a view in cross-section of Fig. 6 taken on the dotted line II. Figs. 9 and 10 are views in elevation and plan respectively of the invention showing a further modification in the construction thereof. Fig. 11 is a view in side elevation of a further modified form of the invention.

respectively. The said jaws are formed with semi-circular gripping faces which canbe serrated as shown or made in any other approved way. The fixed jaw 64 is securely clamped between the ends of two plates 0 which form a frame and the movable jaw b is pivotally mounted on a bolt or pin (Z passing through the opposite ends of said plates.

One of the plates 0 is formed of two parts which are connected by a hinge Z at a point near the inner end of the fixed jaw a. The movable jaw b is provided with a laterally projecting arm m to the outer end of which is connected a rope or cord a. The pulley 9 can be carried by lugs or brackets (not shown) fitted to or formed on the side plates 0 and the bolts or pins (Z and 9 can be retained in position by means of splines or the like.
In order to place the device on a pipe a or the like the nuts are removed from the bolts (Z and g and that end of the plate a on the front of the device is turned outwardly on its hinge Z. The movable jaw 29 is then turned upwardly thereby leaving a free opening for the entrance of the pipe. The hinged portion of the side plate is then placed in its original position, the nuts screwed upon the bolts and the rope f attached to the hook i of the hoisting and lowering gear. When the device is arranged as above described and a strain is placed on the hoisting and lowering gear the movable jaw b will be pulled downwardly and the pipe will be gripped by the device which will hold firmly even when a great strain is used to raise or lower the pipe.
In the modification shown in Figs o to 10 of the drawings the plates 0 of the frame are provided with top and bottom flanges 0 which project inwardly to partially embrace the jaws a and Z). The jaw a is clamped securely between the side plate a by means of bolts, rivets or the like and the jaw Z) is free to slide to and from the said fixed jaw. The outer end of the movably or slidably mounted jaw 72 is made flat and bearing thereagainst is an eccentric 29 mounted on a bolt or pin q which is carried by the side plates 0. The eccentric p is provided with an arm or lever 1' the outer end of which is formed with a hole for attaching therope f or the hook [of the hoisting and lowering gear thereto.
When the device is placed on a pipe as shownin Fig. 5 of the drawings andan upward strain is placed on the lever 'r the movement of the eccentric 72 will cause the movable jaw b to be forced toward the stationary jaw a and thereby grip the pipe tightly. To disengage the device from the pipe the bolt or pin q, the eccentric p and the movable jaw Z) are removed and the device can then be moved sidewise clear of the pipe. The device is attached to a pipe by reversing the order of operations as above described. The eccentric p can be provided with an arm 8 having a cord or rope t attached thereto and depending therefrom.
In order to move the device upwardly on a pipe without causing it to grip the same the rope I? is pulled downwardly to place the eccentric in a. neutral position and a sufficient strain is kept on the said rope to insure the said eccentric remaining inoperative until it has reached a desired point in the length of the pipe when the rope is released. If preferred the arm or lever r can be bent or curved inwardly as shown in Figs. 9"and 10 of the drawings to bring the pull of the hoisting gear closer to the pipe and the eccentric 19 arranged to suit the altered conditions. In lieu of employing one movable jaw and one fixed jaw I may use two movable jaws and two eccentrics p as shown in Fig. 11 of the drawings. When two eccentrics are used the arms on the same can be connected to a bridle M which in turn is connected to the hoisting and lowering gear.
The invention is eXceedingly simple anddurable in construction and in use will be thoroughly eflicient for the purpose for which it has been devised.
l/Vhat I do claim is 2- 1. In a device for raising and lowering pipes, a frame, a hinged side on the frame, a jaw fixedly, secured in one end of said frame, a jaw pivotally mounted in th opposite end of said frame, a lug on the underside of said pivotally mounted jaw, a rope connected to said lug, and a-pulley mounted in said frame beneath the pivotally mounted aw.
2. In a device for raising and lowering pipes, a frame, a hinged side onthe frame, a jaw fixedly secured in one end of said frame, a jaw pivotally mounted in the opposite end of said frame, a lugon the underside of said pivotally mounted jaw, a lever on said pivotally mounted jaw, a flexible member depending from the outer end of said lever, a rope connected to said lug, and a pulley mounted in said frame beneath the pivota'lly mounted jaw.
