PIPE-CLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patenteflfl' n 13, 11916,
Application filed October 3, 1914. Serial No. 864,851.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, PATRICK MAGINNIs and J 01in NELSON, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Kim ball, in the county of Kimball, State of Nebraska, and Potter, in the county of Cheyenne, State of Nebraska, respectively,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe clevises, the said invention relating particularly to means for drawing a pipe from a well or the like, the said invention having for its object the provision of novel means for gripping the pipe, in which the gripping action or the frictional contact between the jaws of the gripper increases with the force ap plied to the elevis for withdrawing the pipe. In other words, the holding action of the clevis is increased proportional to the force or pull exerted for withdrawing a pipe.
A further object of the present invention is to provit e novel means for automatically releasing the grip on the pipe when a pull or force is removed from the body of the clevis, thus permitting the said clevis to fall by gravity to a lower position on a pipe so that it may take a new hold as the pipe drawing mechanism is operated or manipulated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will he had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspec tive of a clevis embodying the invention; 2 illustrates a side elevation thereof applied to a fragment of a pipe; and Fig. 3 illustrates a view on the line 38 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings, we have illustrated an embodiment of the invention as comprising an integral structure in so far as the body is concerned, the same including an upwardly extending loop 4; to which the lifting hook 5 may be applied, the said loop portion 4 having at its lower end a forwardly extending loop 6 and rearwardly extending heel portions 7, the latter of which have recesses forming seats for the trunnions 9 of a dog 10, the said dog having its jaw out to a ii-shape as shown at 11, and the surface thereof serrated to augment the biting or clamping action of the dog with respect to the loop portion 6 of the body, it being understood that the pipe 12 shown in dotted lines is run through the loop of the body and in position to be engaged by the dog so that the dog acts in conjunction with the inner surface of the body constituting the loop portion to grip a pipe and raise it from a well, or for otherwise moving said pipe.
Owing to the fact that the body is preferably formed of flat metal, the elevis can be made comparatively light, yet be capable of withstanding unusual strain, owing to the fact that the thickness of the metal may be minimized so that the strain incident to the use of the clevis will be sustained at points where it is greatest.
As a means for increasing the frictional contact between the dog and the forward loop of the body, the upwardly extending loop is offset from the pipe, the offset portion being indicated at 13 so that when pull is exerted on the hook 5, there will be a tendency to tilt the body of the clevis with relation to the pipe. As a means for increasing the strength of the body of the clevis, beads 1% are produced on the external surfaces of the vertically disclosed as well as on the forwardly extending loops.
' e claim- In a clevis, a body comprising a forwardly extending loop portion, and rearwardly extending heel portions, the latter having recesses in the upper surfaces thereof, dog having integral trunnions seated in the recesses, a vertically extending loop portion integral with the body, and disposed substantially eentrally thereof, and said vertically extending loop portion having an offset portion to provide a clearance for a lifting means.
In testimony whereof, we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK MAGINNIS. JOHN NELSON.
