MOE JACOB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEGGING.
Application filed January 29, 1913.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, More JAooB, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to leggings of that class in which, in place of strings, eyelets and hooks for tightly holding the legging in position, means are employed in connection with folding spring-clasps by which the underand overlapping portions of the legging are connected with each other and a tight closing of the legging obtained without showing any fastening devices on the out side of the same; and for this purpose the invention consists of a legging the underlapping portion of which is provided with a detachable stay the ends of which are inserted into keepers at the upper and lower ends of the underlapping portion of the legging, and which is connected with the overlapping portion of the legging provided with a reinforcing wire at its edge by means of folding spring-clasps that swing on said reinforcing wire over the stay of the underlapping portion, said spring-clasps being hinged to cars attached to sald stay so as to permit the folding of the spring-clasps for closing the legging, and the opening of the clasps for opening and removing the legging.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation of my improved legging, showing it in locked position on the leg, Fig. 2 is also a side-elevation of the legging, showing it in extended or open position for permitting the putting on or removal of the legging, Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the folding spring-clasps between the underand overlapping portions of the legging, showing them respectively in folded'or closed and extended or open position, Figs. 5 and 6 are sections through the folding spring-clasps, respectively on lines 5, 5, Fig. 3, and 6, 6, Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is a detail vertical transverse section through the keeper for the detachable stay of the underlapping portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the different figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, a represents the underlapping and a the overlapping portion of the legging made of leather, cloth Specification of Letters Patent.

or other suitable fabric. The legging a, a is provided at or near the edge of its underlapping portion with a reinforcing steelstay. o to the upper and lower ends of which are riveted sheetmetal keepers at These keepers a serve for receiving the tapering and. rounded-off ends of asecond detachable steel-stay b, which is connected with the overlapping portion a of the legging by means of folding spring-clasps d that are hinged at one end to a reinforcing wire (Z9, which is inserted into the.
hem at the edge of the overlapping portion of the legging so as to readily swing thereon, and at the opposite end hinged to cars (Z on the steel-stay b. The detachable steel-stay b may be japanned or covered with a layer of suitable fabric. The stay 6 is preferably connected by three or more cars (Z and folding spring-clasps (Z with the overlapping portion of the legging, said clasps being formed of longer approximately L-shaped pieces (Z which swing on their hingeconnections with the ears and reinforcing wire (Z over the detachable steel-stay Z) in such a manner that the overlapping portion of the legging is firmly held over the stay Z), as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the clasps being held in folded and locked position, together with the overlapping portion of the legging. When the legging is to be applied to the leg, the clasps are placed into extended position, as shown in Figs. d and 6, so that the ends of the stay of the same can be conveniently removed from or inserted into the lower and upper keepers on the underlapping portion of the legging, as shown in Fig. 2. The legging is closed by bringing the overlapping portion a over the stay 6 by folding the springclasps from their open position, shown in Figs. 4
and 6, into their closed position, shown in Figs. 3 and 5. As the ends of the spring clasps are swung over the stay and passed beyond the center of the hinge-connection with the reinforcing wire of the overlap ping portion of the legging, a 'locking action is exerted by the spring-clasps on the underlapping portion, so that the unintentional or accidental opening of the stays of the legging is prevented, while the opening of the legging is readily accomplished by bringing the overlapping ends of the clasps back into open position on their hinge-com nection with the stay, as shown in Figs. i and 6. By the steel-stay on the underlapping portion of the legging and the locking spring-clasps connecting it with the rein forcing wire of the overlapping portion, a very effective closing of the legging is obtained without requiring any exterior visible closing devices, while by the convenient extending of the clasps and the convenient removal of the overlapping stay from the sockets of the underlapping stay the legging itself canv be entirely opened and removed from or replaced on the leg.
I claim:
1. A legging having underlapping and overlap-ping edges, the underlapping edge being provided with a stay having fixed keepers at its upper and lower ends, a detachable overlapping stay the ends of which are adapted to be inserted into said keepers, a reinforcing Wire at the edge of the overlapping portion of the legging, and locking spring-clasps connecting the overlapping portion of the legging with the detachable stay on the underlapping edge for permitting the swinging over and locking of the edge of the overlapping portion of the leg ging, and folding spring-clasps hinged at one end to the ears on the detachable stay and at their opposite ends to the reinforcing wire of the overlapping edge of the legging for permitting the clasps to be swung into locked position over the detachable stay or into extended or open position. In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
