Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MANNECK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINATION 0F LABEL-HOLDER AND HANDLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,494, dated August 16, 1870.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, HENRY MANNEcK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have l invented a new anduset'ul Combination of a Handle and Label-Holder; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to tbe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful combination of a handleand label-holder for boxes such as are used in retail stores, and which require to be frequently taken down in order to exhibit goods to customers and as frequently replaced on the shelves.y
The object of the invention is to obtain a simple and economical device which will combine the twotarticles above named, admit of being readily applied to the box, and also admit ot' a label being removed and replaced by another, according to the kind ot' goods in the box.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an external view of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section ot' the same; Fig. 3, a detached and enlarged perspective View of one of the fastenings employed. Fig. lis a detached enlarged View of the fastening employed to hold the handle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several tignres.
A represents the outer end or side ot' a pasteboard box, the invention being more especially designed for such boxes.
B is a cast-metal frame, which may be of rectangular form and of any suitable design and size. This frame is cast with inward-projecting anges a a at the top and bottom, to
form guides, between which and the rear side of the frame and front side of the box a piece of card-board, O, is inserted, on which the name of the contents of the box is written or otherwise marked, the frame being open at one end to admit ot' the insertion ot' the cardboard, and closed or partially closed at the other end to serve as a stop for the same.
The frame B is secured to the outer side or end ofthe box by fastenings D, composed of strips of brass or other malleable metal, bent, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to have two prongs, b b, and a head, c, or an eye, d. One of these fastenings passes through a slot in the top of l the frame at its center, and the other two pass through slots in the lower part of the frame at such points as to receive the ends ot' a handle, E, of suitable size, the outer ends of the latter tting in eyes d in the outer ends of the two lower fastenings. The side or end A of the box is pierced to allow the fastenings to pass through it, and the two prongs b b are bent at the inner surface of A, as shown in Fig. 2. The handle E, as well as the frame B, may be of cast-iron, brass, or other suit-able metal.
Having thus described my invention, whatl I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the handle E and frame or label-holder B, constructed, arranged, and secured to the box by the fastenin gs D, or their equivalents, substantially as shown and described.
