To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT H. LINA- wnAvnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gummed-Tape Moist-eners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved gummed tape moistener adapted for automatically moistening gummed tape, whether of paper or cloth, as the same is drawn out from the roll and also for use in cutting 05 pieces of any desired length from the tape as the same is moistened so as to greatly facilitate the use of the gunimed and moistened tape in fastening packages, mail matter, and the like, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which enables the tape roll to be readily placed, therein or removed therefrom, which may be used for moistening tape which is gummed on either side, which may be used for moistening tape of varying widths and which is entirely sanitary and may be readily cleaned and is, moreover, extremely cheap and simple, strong and durable and not likely to get out of order.

The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gum tape moistener. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 4 l of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal sectional View on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.

The base 1 of my improved gummed tape inoistener is hollow and forms a case or receiver for the reception of a roll of gummed tape a, the spool or core piece Z) of the roll of tape being mounted for rotation on a vertical stem 2 which projects upwardly from the center of the bottom of the case and the upper portion of which is screw-threaded and provided with a clamping nut i. A plate 5 which is preferably made of sheet metal is placed in the case 1 and bears frictionally on the upper side of the roll of tape to tension the latter and prevent it from being too readily unwound,

the said friction plate engaging the sides of the case and being, hence, prevented from turning with the gum tape roll. By adjusting the nut on the stem, the friction of the plate 5 on the upper-side of the gum tape roll may be varied as required. The hollow base or case 1 is provided with supporting feet 6 on its lower side at its corners which are preferably made of rubber and the said hollow base or case is also provided with a removable top 8 which is provided near its corners with downwardly eX- tending studs 9 to bear in the corners of the case and, hence, hold the top in place thereon and yet permit the top to be readily removed. The top or cover 8 is provided at its center with a rectangular recess 10 formed by vertical side and end walls 11, one of the end walls being provided with an upwardly extending guide 12 which has a cutter bar 13 at its upper end and is also provided at a suitable point with a guide opening 14 across which extend a pair of spaced guide bars 15. This guide 12 is, in practice, made of sheet metal and is integral with one end wall 11 of the recess 10 and on the outer side of the said guide is a brace 16 which is made of wire of suitable gage, is substantially U-shaped and has its base 17 secured on one end of the cover 8 and its arms 18, which are curved secured at opposite sides of the guide, the latter being also preferably curved, as shown.

The base 17 of the brace is also formed with a guide bar 19 which is spaced from its base 17. In one end wall of the case 1 is a vertical guide slot 20 through which the free end of the tape passes from the roll and at one side of this guide slot is a roller 21 over which the tape passes, there being an in clined guide bar 22 at an angle of 45 on the said wall of the case, near the guide slot 20 and below the guides 1719 of the brace 16 of the upright guide 12.

A reservoir 23 which is here shown as rectangular in form and which, in practice, is preferably made of porcelain or other non-corrosive material is adapted to hold a small quantity of water and is fitted detachably in the recess on the upper side of the cover 8. The vertical side walls of this reservoir are provided in their upper sides with medially arranged semi-circular recesses 24 which form the bearin s for the trunnions 25 of a moistening cylinder 26. This moistening cylinder is also preferably made of porcelain or other material which will not corrode and is detachably mounted on the reservoir and for rotation therein.

The end of the gummed tape passes out through the guide slot 20, bears against the roller bar 21, is then passed around the inclined bar 22 to form a bend therein, and is then drawn upwardly between the guide elements 17-19 of the brace 16 and then passes in through the space between the guide bars 15 of the guide 12. The user by grasping the extreme end of the gummed tape draws the same over the upper surface of the moistening roll and as the moistening roll turns in the water in the reservoir 23, its peripheral surface is wet and, hence, moistens the gummed side of the tape.

By drawing the tape up and across the serrated edge of the cutter bar 13, the moistening tape can be cut off at any desired length, as will be understood.

It will be observed that the roll of tape lies horizontally and is inclosed in the case formed by the base of the device so that it is perfectly protected from dust and dampness. The roll of tape may be readily put in place or removed from the device, tape of any width may be used and, if desired, two or more rolls of tape may be used in the device at the same time, within the limits of capacity of the base case, one roll on another.

The device enables either gummed cloth tape or gummed paper tape to be used, as may be desired.

l/Vhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, 1 would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.

I claim A gummed tape moistening device of the class described comprising a case having a vertical axis rising from its bottom having a roll of gummed tape and also provided at one side wall with a vertical guide opening for the tape and with an inclined guide bar, a removable top to close the upper side of the case, the said top being provided on its upper side with a recess, one wall of which has an upwardly extending guide, the said guide being provided with a cutter bar at its upper end and also provided at an intermediate point with spaced guides, a brace for the said guide secured on the removable top and provided at one end of the top with a guide element for the tape, a reservoir on the case, fitted in the recess thereof, and a moistening cylinder mounted for rotation in the reservoir.
