Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES NEY, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Moisteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in label moisteners and has for its leading object the provision of an improved sanitary machine for moistening gummed labels or stamps.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple, efficient and readily operable moistener for gummed strips which can be easily operated and regulated to supply the desired amount of moisture to the various labels.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will satisfactorily moisten gummed strips or labels and which will serve to deliver said strips onto the article to which they are to be affixed, thus obviating handling of the moistened gummed strip or label and doing away with this annoying and disagreeable feature usually present in affixing stamps or labels.
Other objects and advantages of my im-. proved construction will be readily appar-v ent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accomr l y and it will be understood that I may make any modifications of construction or combination and arrangement of parts within the scope of my claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete machine, Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the device, Fig. 4. represents a cross sectional view thereof, Fig. 5 represents a detailed view, of the wringer adjusting member, Fig. 6 represents a detailed view of the label engaging member, Fig. 7 represents a sectional view of the machine with its rollers removed, and Fig. 8 represents an enlar ed top plan view of one of the roller ajusting belt tightening members.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the rectangular wooden base portion of my device, having the interior lining 2 of asphaltum or other waterproof material and having secured to the upper edges of its sides the basal flanges 3 of the upwardly projecting side plates a and to the edges of its ends the flanges 5 of the end plates 6.
Passing through the side plates 4 are the screws 7 having the milled heads 8 engaging the outer face of the plates 4 and having the nuts 9 engaged on their inner ends, said nuts having the outwardly projecting diametrically oppositely disposed lugs 10 formed thereon. Spanning the screws are the arms of the plates 11, said plates having the slots 12 formed therein in which the lugs 10 are engaged to serve as guides for the longitudinal movement of the plates, while the tightening of the screws serves to draw the nuts 9 against the plates to lock them against longitudinal movement. Said plates have the angle ends 13 to which are secured the adjusting screw members 14: which pass through one of the end plates 6 and have the adjusting nuts 15 engaged thereon and bearing against the plate to longitudinally draw the plates 11 outward toward the end plate.
Formed in the side plates 4 intermediate the screws 7 and the aforementioned end plate is the slightly inclined slot 16 having a horizontal portion 17 extending toward the end plate, while formed in the plates 11 are the curved slots 18 adapted when the plates are in their most inwardly slid position to have their upper ends in alinement with the slots 16 and having their lower portion extending in the opposite direction from that in which the slots 17 extend. Inserted through the coinciding portions of the slots 16'and 18 is the spindle 19 hearing the non-corrosive metal roller 20 having the end flanges 21 adapted to lie against the plates 11. One end of the spindle 19 projects outward from the plate 1 and has a threaded terminal portion for engage ment in the internally threaded socket formed in the end of the operating handle or crank 22 which serves to rotate the roller 20. Secured interiorly to each of the plates 4 is the triple-bearing-forming plate 23, said plate extending from near the upper edge of the plate 4 to the base of the de vice and having the slot 24 formed in its upper edge coinciding with the slot 25 formed in the side plate 4. These coinciding slots together provide an open bearing in which is journaled the stub shaft or spindle 26 secured to the end flange 27 of the roller 28 which is covered with the wringer fabric 29.
Formed in the lower end of the plate 23 is the slot 30 providing a bearing open on its under side, a depending lug 31 being formed integral with the plate at the rear of the slot to serve as a guide for the insertion of the spindle 32 carried centrally of the flange 33 of the guide roller 34.
Projecting from one side of the plate 23 andipartially contained within the tank or base portion of my device is the arm 35 having the slot 36 formed therein to provide a bearing open at the top, one of the spindles 36 of the end flange 37 of the guide roller 38 being engaged in the slot 36.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction of my improved device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that the plate 23 serves to support in position the rollers 28, 34 and 38, while passing over said rollers and over the roller 20 is the endless band 39 preferably of silk, and it will be seen that said band passes around the roller 34 and holds it up into its bearing, while the position of said roller holds the band down upon the rollers 28 and 38 to retain them in their bearings. To adjust the tension of the belt it is merely necessary to rotate the adjusting nuts 15 which will shift the plates 11 and thus the roller 20 to give any desired tension to the belt.
In the use of my machine, I fill the tank with water to the desired depth and then rotate the roller 20 by means of its handle 22 to cause the band to pass down through the water and then up over the rollers 28, and 20. To prevent an excess quantity of moisture remaining on the band as it passes from the roller 28 to the roller 20, I pivotally secure to each'of the side plates 4 at the rear of the plate 23 the T-shaped memher having its stem 40 pivotally held in pOSition by the screw 41 and having the rear end of its head 42 connected by the blade spring member 43 with the plate on the opposite side of the machine. Secured centrally of said member 43 is the lug 44 adapt ed to be engaged in the socket 45 of the adjusting screw 46 engaged in the socket 47 secured to the end plate 6 and having a milled head 48 for turning the screw. Formed in the forward end of the heads 42 of said plate is the rearwardly curving slot 49 for engaging the spindle 50 of the wringer roller 51 which rests between the flanges 27 of the roller 28 and bears against the covering 29 of said roller, the rotation of the adjusting screw serving to force the wringer roller against said roller 28 to resiliently hold the wringer roller in position to press the water out of the endless band. It is evident that I may thus have any desired amount of moisture upon the endless belt or band and I preferably employ silk for said band as it will absorb less moisture than either wool or cotton fabric, and in the use of my machine, the stamp or gummed label is placed upon the band and the roller 20 rotated to cause the band to carry the gummed member forward and off at the other end of the machine, as clearly shown 7 in the drawings. 7
To insure the gummed member being pressed firmly upon the moistened band and to obviate the necessity for manually engaging the label, I secure to each of the side plates the U-shaped member 52 which spans the side plate, while rising from the member 52 is the threaded post 53 having a short coiled spring 57 mounted thereon on which rests the plate 54 having the depending rounded teeth 55, adjusting nuts 56 being engaged on the upper ends of the posts to force the teeth of the plate down firml against the band, the coiled spring holding the plate upward against said adjusting nut.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that as the label is placed on the moistened band the teeth will press the label against the band to cause said band to thoroughly moisten the label, while as the roller 20 is rotated the band will carry the label forward when it will naturally slide over the front edge of the end plate and thus onto the article to which it is to be aflixed, the pressure exerted on the label by the teeth 55 causing it to curl upward to be more readily discharged from the band.

ceptacle having a pair of plates secured therein, a plurality of rollers supported by the plates, a single roller, an endless belt trained around all the rollers, side and end plates supported upon the upper edges of V the sides and ends of the receptacle, said side plates having inclined slots with horizontal portions formed therein, adjustable plates engaging the inner surfaces of the side plates and having longitudinal slots formed therein, screws passable through the plates for engagement with the slots, nuts engaging the screws, lugs formed upon the nuts and engaging the slots to provide guides for the adjustable plates, said adjustable plates having curved slots formed therein and adapted to register with the inclined slots to form a bearing for receiving the spindles of the single roller, and means In testimony whereof I affix my signature, passable through one of the end plates to in the presence of two witnesses.
