M. E. HARWELL. STAMP AFPIXER. APPLICATION I'I LED APR.4, 1910.
Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
WITNESSES:
I INVENTOI? W65 6 24 ARV NE. HARM/41.

implication mes s in 1, one.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, lllARYlb'I E. llnnvnnn, a citizen of the United Slates, and a rcsi dent of De Kalb, in the county of Bowie and State of 'lexas. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp- Afiixers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in stamp affixing devices and has for an object to provide a simple and novel construction. whereby the stamps may be conveniently moistened as they pass to the point where tl .v are to be applied to the envelops.
e invention provides means for suppo a strip of stamps and for guiding the same to the moistening device together with a fountain for supplying water to the nioistening pad so that the latter will be kept moist until the supply of water in the fountain is exhausted, means being also provided whereby the fountain can be conveniently refilled; and the invention consists'in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view of my device as in use. lfiig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section on about line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a cross section on about line l 'l of Fig. 1.
ln carrying out my invention I. extend the side plates A. of the fountain A. rearwardly beyond the fountain forming arms A. which furnish bearings for the stamp roll ll, such bearings being usually provided by pressing knobs or protuberances A inwardly from the plates A as best shown in Fig. 3. T he arms i are thus conveniently provided in connection with the construction or the fountain A and they also operate as guards for the plug or other closure of the fountain A. which is disposed between the' arms A as best shown in Fig. .2 of the drawing and will be thus guarded and protected by the said arms.
The fountain is formed ottvvo plates of metal, one plate being bentto form the side plates A, the bot-torn plate A", the rear end plate A having the filling opening wit the front. end of the bottom plate A curved upwardly at A? to the top plate D which v "MW" Specification of Letters Patent.
l l l l and for the purposes set Patented fling. ltd, Llll'lltl.
Serial. no. 553,175.
top plate is separate from the main plate and may be suitably secured thereto by soldering or otherwise as will be understoo from l of the drawing.
An opening E is provided at the top of the fountain inn'nediately adjacent to the upwardly sloping end plate A for the passage of the wick l which may be of felt or other suitable material and may be disposed. as shown in l igs. l and 9. to project slightly above the top plate l) to Wipe the under pasted sides of the stamps. The side plates A are extended above the top plate forms ing guide fian es at the opposite sides of the fountain and these flanges are beaded or rounded at their upper ends at G7 see Fig. 4,
to strengthen the device and to furnish. a
smooth surface at the upper side thereof.
The upwardly curved end A. ot the fountain forms rounded rocker ,like surface which will facilitate the rocking of the fountain to bring the moistened stamp down close to the envelop or other package to which it is to be applied and the stamps will pass from the roller B overthe flanged. up-
per side of the fountain and thence over the wick and may be conveniently applied to mail matter. The fountain when empty can be easily refilled. by removing the closure C. The arms A. are suilic-iently resilient to permit the application of the roller l3 whenever desired and yet will hold the said roller with sufticient tension to prevent its accidental displacement.
I claim:
A stamp rnoistening device comprising a fountain having a bottom plate, side lates, atop plate, an upwardly rounded end p ate at one end and having its side plates extended at its other end and provided with bearings for a roll of stamps and having the end plate between said bearing plates provided with a filling opening and with a closure there'llor the fountain having; in its top adjacent to its upwardly rounded end plate, a wick opening and a wick therein and the side plates of the fountain being extended above the top late forming guide flanges, all substantia y as forth. MARVIN E. HARWELL. Witnesses:
C. C. Gnome, C. C. Peoo'ron.
