E. E. JENNE MOISTENER FOR ENVELOPES AND THE LIKE Nov. '6 1923. 15473594 Filed May 22 1922 1 /277202? cferzrze Al IORNEY WXTNESS:
Patented Nov. 6, 1923,
morsrnnnn r03. ENVELOPES AND THE LIKE.-
Application filed May 22,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. JENNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilion, in the county of I-Ierkimer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Moisteners forEnvelopes and the like, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to stationery devices particularly to moisteners for stamps, envelopes and the like, and has for its'object, the provision of a novel device of this character embodying a water containing receptacle in which is partially submerged a rotatable cylinder over which the gummed paper is rawn for effecting moistening thereof.
A very important object is the provision of a device of this character in which the cylinder is carried by pivoted arms engaged by projections on a slidable cover. the arrangement being such that when the cover is in closed position the cylinder is swung; down out of the way while when the cover is in open position the cylinder will be swung up into its active or operative position.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects-and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: 7
Figure 1'is a perspective view of the device in operative position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section there through, i
Figure 3 is a similar view with the cover in closed position and I 5 Figure 4' is a cross section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral designates a rectangular receptacle of any suitable size and material and having its top open and provided with guides 11. At one end the upper edges of this receptacle are slightly cut away as shown at 12 and the upper edge of this end is formed with an inturned flange 13.
Pivoted at 14 against the inner face of both sides of the receptacle are arms 15 which are formed with recesses 16 receiving faces 19.

wardly as shown andhave inclined bearing 19 for swinging the arms 15'to'elevate the cylinder when thecover is slid to open posi- Slidably mounted within the guides 11 is a cover 20 which is provided on its underside with a'pair of cam like pro-- jections 21engageable with the bearing faces ,The other ends of these arms are inclined uption so that the cylinder will extend slightly above the cover at'the cut away p0rtion'12.
In the use of the device, assuming that the cover is in open position and the cylinder elevated as above described, the envelope flaps, stamps or anything else to be moistened are drawn across the-roller or cylinder whereupon the water adhering to'the cylinder will effect the moistening. When the use of the device is not desired thecover'is slid into closed position whereupon 7 the weight of the cylinder will cause it to swing When the device is thus closed it will be proteoted from dust and dirt so that it will re main longer in a sanitary condition.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent" that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive moistening device which will efiiciently operate for the purpose specified and which owing to its peculiar construction and simplicity should have a long life. r 7
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction and arrangement of parts as will 7 not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising an open topped receptacle, a pair of arms pivoted Within the receptacle, a cyl inder always partially submerged in water within the receptacle and covered when'not in use and provided at its ends with trun nions detachably engaged uponsaid arms, and a cover slidable upon the receptacle and formed with cam'projections engaging said. arms for veffecting raising and lowering of the cylinder. e 2. A device of the character described of the cover.
comprising an open topped receptacle for water, the upper edge of the opposite sides of the receptacle being partially cut away at one end a pair of arms pivoted intermediate their ends upon the inner faces of 0pposite sides of the receptacle and having one end formed with recesses and their other ends formed with inclinedbearin faces, a cylinder Within the receptacle having trunnions receiving Within saidrrecess, a cover slidable upon the receptacle and carrying cam projections engageable with said inclined bearing faces for varying the posi tion of the arms and cylinder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ELMER E. JENNE.
