WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLIFFORD E. DUNN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GILLETTE SAFETY RAZOR COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedMay 25,1907. Serial No. 375,586.
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD E. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to safety razors, such as are adapted particularly for use in connection with flexible blades, although they can be used with other kinds of blades if desired.
The objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such devices; furthermore, to increase their efficiency in use, and to decrease the expense attending their manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combiaccordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the guard. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a slightly modified construction. Fig 5 is a view taken at a right angle to Fig. 4. j
The reference numeral 1 in Fig. 2 represents a guard or clamping member which, as shown in Fig. 3, is provided along its opposite edges with-teeth 2. The guard 1 is also formed adjacent its center with a rectangular opening 3, and adjacent its ends with circular openings 4. The numeral 5 indicates a cap or clamping member, which is adapted to cooperate with the clamping member 1 for the purpose of clamping a razor blade against the same. The guard 1 and cap 5 are preferably in practice transversely curved, for the purpose of flexing therrazor blade 6. The cap or clamping member 5 is shown provided with a pair of positioning pins 7, located in position to clamping members.
extend through suitable perforations in the Patented June 10, 1913.
A cam construction is illustrated for adjustably forcing the clamping members 1 and 5 together and locking them in their adjusted positions. The clamping cam is shown pivotally supported on one of the In. the embodiment of invention herein disclosed the clampingcam or locking device 8 is shown pivotally mounted at 9 between a pair of e s or lugs 10 carried by the cap 5. When th e parts are in-the position shown in Fig. 2 the locking device 8, together with the ears 10, will project through the opening 3 in the guard 1. The cam face 11 of the locking device 8 is located in position to engage the under surface 12 of the guard 1. The formation of the cam may be such that it will remain in its position of adjustment orsome oooperative locking device may be employed. The handle 11 of the locking device 8 is shown constructed for engagement with a series of teeth 15, which are shown formed integrally upon a curved portion or yoke 16 connected with the guard 1, and with the handle 17 of the razor. By moving the locking device 8 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, the cam face 11 engages the underface 12 of the guard 1 and draws the cap 5 against the guard 1, thereby flexing the razor blade 6 and clamping it in position. The degree to which the blade shall be flexed'can be regulated by engaging the handle 14 with the appropriate tooth. of the series of teeth 15, as will be readily understood.
The modified construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is exactly the same as the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, except that the cap 5 is provided at the opposite ends thereof with downwardly extending arms 20, in which are formed longitudinal slots 21, traversed by bolts or. screws 22 connected with the guard 1. The slotted arms 20 serve to provide a yielding and pivotal connection between the guard and cap, which connection permits said members to be sep The improved razor of the present invention is strong, simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction, as well as thoroughly efiicient in operation.
What is claimed is: V
1. A safety razor having a pair'of blade clamping members, a rack connected with one of said members, and a pivotally-mount ed locking device connected with the other of said members and having its free end 10-h cated in position to engage said rack for locking said members together.
2. A safety razor comprising a guard having a central opening'therein, a handle having a yoke-shaped portion connected with said guard and provided with a curved rack, a cap having a pair of lugs and a locking device pivotally mounted between said lugs having a cam portion, said locking de- 20 vice being adapted to extend through the position relativel opening in said guard and to be engaged with its free end with said curved rack.
' 3. A safety razor having a pair of clamping members adapted to flex a thin razor blade, one of said members having an opening therein, a pivotal locking device connected with the other of the said members extending through said opening, and a rack fast with one of said members and located in to the free end of said pivotal locking evice so as to be engaged thereby.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
