Description

matted mes HENRY VAN KEUKEN, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent N 106,433, dated.l August 16, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making'part of 'the same.
o all whom 'it may concern f Be it known that I, HENRY VANKEUREN, of Jersey City, in lthe county ot'- Hudson and State of N ew Jersey, have invented and made a new and uset'ul lmprovelm-.nt in lumps; and the following is hereby declared to be a correct description oft-hesame.
For canal-boats and barges a pump is extensively employed, made ot'vsheet metal, such as tin, with a cheek-valve at the bottom, and a piston and valve, worked by a rod or handle. This same character ot' pump is also used in excavations, such as for sewers, drains, A
' The' .valves ot' tiiepump frequenti-y become obstructed by sand and foreign substances, and, in sew- Yers, the saul is sometimes pumped, through carelessness, into the barrel ot' thepump, and, in lit'ting'up the "sheet-metal"pump, with this accnniulatiom to empty the same out-the metal is of'teu indented and broken, audjthe accumulation ot'water, while the pump is heilig putI into condition, sometimes injures the 'workg buta more ii'nitful source ot' trouble arises from the inet that the sheet metal of the barrel is soldered direct to thc ring that carries the ralves, hence, the
"pump has to be unsoldered or eutrwhen there are any unscrcwed from the pump with facility, to give access to the valves, for cleaning or replacing the valves, or for cleaning lthe barrel, thereby lesseuiug the risk ot injury to the pumpbarrel, avoiding the uusoldering or cutting heretofore usual, and avoiding the diiculties heretofore liable to arise whenthe pump'becomes useless.
In the drawing- Figurel is a vertical section of the said ring, base, and valves, and i Figure 2 is a sectional plau et' the same.
The barrel a ot1 the pump is made of sheet metal, such tin, soldered to the auxiliary screw-ring b; and
e is the base oft-he pump that' screws into the ring b, and is providedwit-h the legs or supporting projections 2 2, valve-seats 3 4, and valves e.
` lt will now bennderstood that the base ot' the pump can be uuscrewed and removed with facility, t'orcleaning the valves or barrel, and thatuew valves can be introduced by removingl the screw 5 and bar (i.
I claim as my invention- The auxiliary ring b, soldered t0 the sheet-metal pump-barrel, and combined with the base c and val ves e, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes Vset forth.
Signed this 31st day ot'liIay, A. D. 1870.
HENRY VAN KEUKEN.
