Description

, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ JAMES ROGERS, OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR FORMING STOVEP|PE.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,405. dated July 3l, lt`60.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RoGERs, of the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Impovement in a Machine for Forming Stove-Pipe, which I call Rogerss Improved Stove-Pipe Former,
` and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a front View, Figs. 2 and 8 hori- Zontal sections, Fig. 4 an end View, and Fig. 5 a horizontal section, of the `journal and box of the roller B.
The machine is in most respects the same as the stove-pipe former in common use. It is composed of the usual frame, as represented by A, with the metallic rollers B, C, and D, worked by the usual gearing.
My improvement is of such a nature that the stove-pipe can be brought into nearly a perfect cylinder, ready for closing, and be drawn from the former without changing its shape, whereas by the machines in common use it is necessary to stop the operation of the same when the pipe is only about two-thirds formed, in order to be able to take the same from the machine, and the balance of the work must be done with a mallet.
In order to accomplish my purpose, the journal of the upper and front rolleris much longer on the usideof the frame, as shown atb. This cylinder is kept in place, when the machine is in use, by a stopper, I, made of wood or metal. This journal b works in a box, G, the diagonal corners of which are beveled, as at c and e.
When the machine is in use forming the pipe, the roller B is in position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5. Vhen the pipe is to be taken from the roller and the stopper I is raised, and the roller slipped out of gear till the jou rnal b is clear of its box. The beveled corners of the box G allow the roller to be putin position, as shown in Fig. 3, with the journal b resting on a lip or projection, H, in which position the pipe can be slipped off in a perfectlyformed state, ready for closing, and the roller replaced for further use.
NVhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with stove-pipeforming niachines, a box, G, the diagonal corners e e of which are beveled, and a lip, H, arranged in the manner and `for the purposes set forth.
JAMES ROGERS.
