LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' atented J une 3, 1913.
Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial No. 694,796.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, FREDERICK E. Snx' AUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved loose leat binder and consists in the construction, com bination and arrangement of devices hereinatter described and claimed.
(fine object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the covers.
Another object is to provide improved means for detachably securing the covers together on opposite sides of a number of loose sheets or leaves and for permitting the ad justment ot the covers according to the re- (piired :apacity of the binder.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the members thereoi detached. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line Z)Z) of Fig. 1. Fig. 5'.- .is a detail, sectional view of one of the adjustable locking devices.
In accordance with my invention, I pro vide a pair of clamping or binding members l-2 which are preferably made of sheet metal but may be made of any other suitable material and are cross sectionally L- shaped. 'lhese clamping or binding members are adapted to be placed on opposite sides 01 loose sheets or leaves to be bound together, and at one edge or end of the loose sheets or leaves so that one web 3 of each bii'iding member bears on one side of one of the loose sheets or leaves and the other web at bears at one end or edge thereof, the said webs rt ot the members 1--2 being arranged in overlapping relation. The web 3 of the mbmber 2 is provided near its ends with inwardly extending guiding and locking tubes 5 which are provided each with a series of transverse slots 6 in one side. The ctn'respouding web 3 of the member 1 is also provided with tubes 7 which are of slightly less diameter than the tubes 5 but are adapted to be telescopically fitted in the said tubes 5, the tubes 5-7 of the binding members being adapted to be passed through openings in the loose sheets or leaves, to be bound by the device, and some of which are indicated at w in Figs. 2 and If desired, flexible or other suitable covers y may be arranged on the outer sides of the loose sheets or leaves and engaged by the webs 8 off the binding members.
The binding member 1 has openings 8 in its web 3, which openings are coincident with the tubes 7. Locking hooks 9 extend through and operate in the tubes 7 and each of the said locking tubes is provided at its outer end with an arm 10 ar 'anged on the outer side of the web 3 01 the member 1. The said arm 10 is nearly at right angles to the stem of the hook 9 and the angle between the said arm and the stem of the hook forms in connection with one side of the opening 8 through which the hook extends, a pivotal connection between the locking hook and the web 3 of the member 1., the arm 10 serving as a lever whereby to operate the hook. The spring 11 has one end secured on the outer side of the web 3 of the member 1, one of these springs being provided for each locking hook, and the free end 01 the said spring pressing on the inner portion of the arm 10 of the locking hook, the function of the spring being to normally turn the hook outwardly so as to cause its bill 12, which projects beyond the end 01 the tube 7 to engage one of the slots 6 of the tube 5 in which the ,tube 7 is fitted, said hook by such engagement with the slot serving to lock the binding or clamping members together, as will be understood, and the said slots enabling the binding and clamping members to be adjusted to acconnnodate any number of the a loose sheets or leaves.
In order to disconnect the binding or clamping members, it is only necessary to press the outer end of the arms 10 of the locking hooks against the web 3 of the member 1, thereby causing the bills 12 of the hooks 9 to be moved inwardly out ot' engagement with the adjusting and locking slots (3 and, hence, permitting the tubes 7 to be withdrawn from or readjusted in the tubes 5, as will be understood.
I also provide a cover 13 which is detachably secured on the web 3 of the binding member 1 and serves to cover or conceal the arms 10 of the locking hooks or catches and to also cover and conceal the actuating springs 11. This cover is provided with openings 14L at points near the outer ends of the arms 10 of the hooks or catches to permit the said arms to be pressed downwardly by the thumb or fingers through the open ing 14:.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a loose leaf binder, the combination of a pair of cross sectionally L-shaped bind ing members arranged wit-h their outer webs in overlapping relation, the opposing webs of the binding members being respectively provided with telescopically related tubes, one tube of eachpair having a series of ad justing slots, the other binding member being provided with a catch arranged in its tube and adapted to engage the slots of the slotted tube to detachably secure the binding members together, each catchhaving an operating arm or lever at an angle thereto arranged on the outer side of the binding member to which said catch is connected, and a spring on the outer side of the last mentioned binding member and bearing on the said arm of the catch to normally hold the catch in engaged position.
2. Ina loose leaf binder, the combination of a pair of cross sectionally L shaped binding members arranged with their outer webs in overlapping relation, the opposing webs of the binding members being respectively provided with telescopically related tubes, one tube of each pair having a series of adjusting slots, the other binding member being provided with a catch arranged inits tube and adapted to engage the slots of the slotted tube to detachably secure the binding members together, each catch having an operating arm or lever at an angle thereto arranged on the outer side of the binding member to which said catch is connected, a spring on the outer side of the lastmentioned binding member and bearing on the said arm of the catch to normally hold the catch in engaged position, and a cover for the operating arms and springs of the catches, said cover being provided with openings displaying and affording access to the operating arms of the catches.
Intestimony whereof I am); my signature in presence of two witnesses.
