FILING AND DISPLAY DEVICE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June a, 1913.
Application filed July 17, 1911 Serial No. 638,819.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MA S. .Ensnun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, int-he county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing and Display Devices, of which the following is a specification- This invention relates to files or containers for photographs, post-cards, tailors samples, and the like, and its objects are to provide means capable of receiving a relatively large number of articles, to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the articles, and to provide for the convenientexamination of the articles contained in the file or holder, inexpensiveness being also an important featurc attained by means of my invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figu"; l is a vertical central section through a cabinet embodying the features of my invention, the cabinet being represented as closed. Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. l, but showing the cabinet open. Fig. 3 is a fragmental detail view illustrating the construction and mounting of the devices by means of which articles are supported and connected in place. F ig. 4.- is a fragmental view of the parts shown in Fig. 3, the view being taken in a plane transverse to that of Fig. 3.
While my invention may be embodied in a book, portfolio, filin drawer, and various other forms, it is herein shown as embodied in a cabinet. The cabinet may-be of any suitable shape, but in this instance it is shown as comprising a bottom wall or base l,"side and rear walls 2, a front Wall or lid 3 connected in a suitable manner, as by hinge means a, to the forward edge of the bottom 1, and a cover 5 hinged in this instance to the upper edge of the rear wall 2. Any suitable means, such as a latch 6, may be used to secure the cover in closed posit-ion. In order that photographs and other articles of considerable size may be accommodated in the cabinet without unduly increasing the height of the walls, the cover 5 ismade of chambered or recessed form so net.
To the upper side of the bottom wall 1 is secured a suitable number of parallel bars 7 preferably of. sheet metal, said bars being spaced above the bottom. wall by means of .ineinbcrs Upon the bar or bars 7' are mounted devices adapted for engagepractically to form a section of the cabiment with photographs, which devices in the present instance consist of clips 9 connected to the bars 7 by means of links. These links may be associated with the bars 7 in any suitable-way; herein 1 have Tshown them as being slidable along the bars. While any suitable form of clip may be used, the form herein shown consists of two arms 10 crossing one another and adapted to lie at opposite sides ofthe article and clamp said article by means of the resiliency of the wire from which the clip is formed. The lower portions 11 of said arms are straight and parallel, and the lower ends thereof are connected by the cross-bar 12. The link before referred to is of U form, the arms 13 receive the cross-bar 12, said arms being joined by the transverse portion 15 underlying the clips are provided for each of the bars or strips 7, only a partial set being illustrated in the present drawings. I
ln use, the photographs or other articles cards or the like,
to be mounted are placed in the clips, as indicated in F igs. 3 and 4.. When the cabinet 'is in closled position the articles stand within the cabinet, as indicated in Fig. 1, the front and rear, walls of the cabinet preferably being inclined rearwardly at a suitable angle so that the articles shall be stable in the upright or withdrawn position illustrated in said figure.
When it is desired to examine or display the articles, the cover 5 is swung upwardly and rearwardly, and the lid 3 swung down ward into or'toward the horizontal position. The articles may now be successively turned. from their normal upright position into the substantially horizontal position indi cated in F ig. 2,.so as to expose to view the successive articles. It will be seen from Fig.
2 that by reason of the jointed or link 0011- nection of the clips to the cabinet, and also having eyes 14C to by reason of their sliding connection to the cabinet, the articles are permitted to space themselves apart automatically so as to be free to assume a substantially horizontal position, this result being facilitated by reason of the fact that'the inner-or attached end of any given article-is free to rise or move away from the bar or strip 7 to come pcnsatc for the thickness of the articles upon which the given article rests.
I would have it understood that in the practical manufacture of devices embodyioc ing invention various changes may be made from the form herein illustmltecl, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as set forth. in the appsncled claims,
I claim as my invention:
1. A holder-for photographs or the like comprising a, base portion a fiat bar at taohe to said base portion and spaced. therefrom, links of Wide U-forn, the base of the U being straight, said links being slida loiy engaged with said. bar, the warns of the i! having eyes, and clips for supporting cords, said clips being pivoted to the eyes of said links.
2. A holder for photographs or the like, comprising a base portion, a bar immovably attached to saitl base portion and a plurality of independently movable olevices, each consisting of a link loosely engaging with said her for movement with relation thereto in e direction lengthwise of the bar, said link being adapted to extend right angles to the bar and being further adapted to be tilted forwardly into a position at. a small angle with said bar a clip adapted to receive and grip the edge of a card, clip being pivoted to self link tor swing ing movement lengthwise of said. her, said Loosen) clip being adopted to extend UiJS-tflntifiilfy' sit rightangles to said bar and beingalso adopted to lie fiat along the lam when said link is tilted forwm'dly. V
3. A holder for photographs or the like, comprising {L base and a plurality of independent devices pennanently mounted, on lea-iii base, each of said. devices; consisting of: e liiik movobly engaging at one end. Wit-ii said base, and a clip pivoted to the other end of said. link and mi'eiigeci to receive and grip the or? o; card, said link being movable with respect to said base in the same direction as that in which the clip moves with resp ot to being adapted to be swung iii. 10 position ai osn ell angle with said loose and. said links assulniiig different positions from one at a small angle with the base to one a proximotel angles to the base, Wnerolxy said links will permit the corfls in said clip to lie fist one UpOT'l. are tilted forwm'ii.
In testimony whereof l llQlQlilliiO nfiix. my signature in the presence two witne se said link, solid clips" the other: when the cards,
