JAMES T. KEYES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SIDE GUARD FOR SPRING-MATTRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 2, 1913.
Patented May 27,1913.
Serial No. 758,457.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns T. KEYES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Side Guards for Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wire mattresses, and is designed as a modification of the construction of side guards therefor disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,045,563, granted to me November 26, 1912.
More specifically my present improvement consists in a novel means for rendering the side guards vertically adjustable with respect to the woven wire mattress body and its frame, whereby the same may be either adjusted to position for use or disposed so that their upper edges are flush with said mattress body so as to be out of the way for transportation purposes.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a woven wire mattress frame embodying my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one corner of the mattress frame. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 38, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing the reference numerals 1 denote the side bars and 2 the end bars of the mattress frame, the latter being formed preferably of angle iron as shown, said parts being bolted together at 3. I have shown the woven wire mattress body 4, which may be of any approved construction, firmly attached to the end bars 2 by having its ends downturned and clamped against the vertical portions of said end bars by means of fiat bars 5, though the method of attachment may be varied, if desired. At each corner of the mattress frame is a vertically disposed angle piece 6, against one side of which is clamped an end of the woven wire side guard 7, a clamping plate 8 riveted to said angle piece serving to effect this clamping, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said angle pieces 6 are slotted vertically at 9 to receive bolts 10 passed through suitable apertures in the end bars 2 and flat bars 5, nuts 11 serving to clamp said angle pieces in any adjusted position vertically within the limits of said slots 9, with respect to said end bars 2. By this means the angle pieces 6 and their attached woven wire side guards 7 may be readily adjusted either to the position shown at the left corner of the mattress frame, in which position the side guard 7 is disposed with its upper edge substantially flush with the mattress body 4:, and is out of the way for transportation purposes, or to the position shown at the right corner of the mattress frame, where the side guard is elevated into position for use in connection with the usual stuffed mattress. An important advantage obtained byv this construction is that the adjustment of the side guards may be varied at will to suit different thicknesses of the stuffed mattresses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a wire mattress body and its frame, separate side guards therefor, end pieces for said side guards having direct connecting means with said frame affording vertical adjustment, and means for retaining said end pieces and side guards in any adjusted position.
2. In combination with a wire mattress body and its frame, separate side guards therefor, angle end pieces for said side guards slotted vertically to receive bolts connected to said mattress frame, and nuts on said bolts for clamping said end pieces in any adjusted position vertically with respect to said mattress and its frame.
3. In combination with a wire mattress body and its frame, separate woven wire side guards therefor, angle end pieces slotted vertically in one face to receive bolts connected to said mattress frame, nuts on said bolts for clamping said end pieces in any adjusted position vertically with respect to said mattress and its frame, and plates disposed against the other faces of said end pieces between which and said end pieces the ends of the side guards are clamped.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES T. KEYES. Witnesses:
