UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFTGE.
ROBERT M. AXFORD, OF CORVALLIS, OREGON.
DRINKING-CUP.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Ronnn'r M. Axronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corvallis, in the county of Benton, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Cups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drinking cups and has for an object to provide a drinking cup and a housing therefor which may be disposed in the side of a traveling bag, or any other article and will be inconspicuous while at the same time the cup will be shielded from dust and other foreign matter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drinking cup which is so secured to the housing as to be readily detached when required, the cup having a novel grip or handle which performs the dual function of securing the cup to the housing and forming a closure which prevents access of dust to the housing.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cup and grip therefor, both parts being detachably secured together so that either may be removed and replaced with a new one when necessary in a minimum time and with minimum manual exertion.
WVith the above objects in View the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification:Figure 1 is a front elevation of a traveling bag equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cup and housing. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through a modified form of the invention. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4: 4:, Fig. 8.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates in general a traveling bag to which in the present instance my invention is shown applied.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 2, 1911.
Patented May 27,1913. Serial No. 663,582.
The drinking cup 11 is preferably formed of metal and is provided on the bottom with a circumferential flange 12. 11 substantially cylindrical handle or grip 13 is secured to the flange through the instrumentality of screws 1%, and furthermore is provided approximately centrally with a circumferential flange 15. That portion of the grip disposed between the cup and grip flange is exterior-1y screw threaded as shown at 16.
The housing 17 may be formed of any de sired material and is in the nature of a cup which is provided at the mouth with a circumferential flange 18 against which the grip flange abuts to limit advance of the cup into the housing. The housing is interiorly provided with screw threads 19 for engagement with the threads of the grip. The housing flange 18 is preferably square in outline and is provided with a marginal series of openings to receive rivets or the like 20, for securing the housing in position upon the article to which it is applied, it being understood that an opening is formed in the article for the reception of the housing so that the latter is concealed within the article while the grip of the drinking cup is exposed on the exterior of the article.
To insert or remove the drinking cup, it is simply necessary to grasp the cup grip and rotate the same in such a direction as to screw grip into or out of the housing.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of the invention, in which 21 designates the drinking cup, the same being formed at the bottom with a circumferential flange 22. The grip in the present instance is shown to be formed in two parts, namely a stock 23 upon which the bottom of the cup rests and which is provided with a circumferential flange 2i and a clamping ring 25, the latter being provided with an interior annulus 26 adapted to bear upon the cup flange and clamp the cup to the stock. The ring is secured to the stock through the instrumentality of screws or similar connectors 27, and is furthermore provided exteriorly with screw threads 28. The housing of the modification consists of a cup 29 which is of sufficient size to receive the drinking cup, and is provided at the mouth with a flange 30, the latter being in the nature of an annulus which is provided centrally with a cylindrical lip 31 which fits into the interior of the cup 29 and is secured to the latter by solder or other suitable means. The lip is interiorly provided with screw threads to engage the threads of the clamping ring. Insertion and removal of the drinking cup from the housing is effected in the same manner as above described.
It will be observed that in both the preferred and modified forms of the invention, the grip forms a closure for the mouthof the housing so that dust and other foreign matter is prevented from access to the interior of the housing. Furthermore, the peripheral flange of the grip abuts against the rigid peripheral flange of the housing so that the article to which the device is applied is not mutilated during advance of the drinking cup to final position within the housing. It will also be observed that the cup is removably secured to the grip so that both parts may be renewed independent of ach other when necessary.
lVhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a bag, of a cas- "ing projecting through an opening in the [25 wall of the bag and having a closed end and an open end, a flange located at the open end of the casing and adapted to lie against the outer face of the bag, fastening means se curing the flange to the bag and retaining the casing in position, and a cup carrying member forming a closure for the casing and provided with a circumferentially threaded member adapted to cooperate with a correspondingly threaded portion located at the open end of the casing to retain the cup housed within such casin 2. The combination with a bag having an opening in the wall thereof, of a casing projecting through said opening into the bag and having an open mouth portion, means attached to the outer wall of the bag for se curing the casing in position relative to such bag, and a cup carrying member provided with a threaded portion adapted to engage with acorrespondingly threaded portion 10- 1ated at the mouth of the casing and said cup carrying member being further provided with an intermediate flange designed to bear against the casing securing means and with the outer portion of said member forming a handle.
3. 'l he combination with a bag having an opening therein of a casing projecting through the opening in the bag, means for securing the casing to the bag, a cup having a flange at the bottom, a handle including a stock adapted for engagement with the cup bottom and having a circumferen ial flange, means removably connecting the :up flange to the stock, the casing securing means also having a flange at the mouth bearing against the stock flange.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
