CHURN-DASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed March 1, 1913. Serial No. 751,578.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BELLE BELLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hays, in the county of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Churn-Dashers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rl`his invention relates to new and useful improvements in churns and more particularly to a churn dasher for the type of dcvices known as barrel churns and my object is to provide an improved dasher which may be readily1 and quickly applied to use when desired.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a dasher designed to form a substantial frame having the solid heads at the ends thereof adapted to contact with the inner wall of the churn body and a still further object resides in providing one of said heads rigid on the dasher and the other adapted for removable engagement therewith.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing improved means for adjustably securing the removable head to the one end of the churn dasher, whereby the dasher may be applied to use in churn bodies of various sizes.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing formino` a part of this application, Figure 1 is a p an view of a churn having my improved dasher applied to use therein; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dasher removed.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar' reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which l indicates a barrel or similarly designed churn body having trunnions 2 projecting from the sides thereof, whereby to oscillatingly or rotatably mount the same upon a support. This body could, be of any design, but in such forms of churns, the same are usually designed a barrel and such shape is preferable, but this forms an unimportant feature of my invention.
My invention primarily contemplates the provision of a dashcr which may be readily and quickly applied to use in such a body and to this end, I provide a frame member 3 which consists ot a pair of parallel side rails 4 and connecting transverse slats 5, the latter being spaced one from the other and as many provided, as desired. Secured to the one end of the frame and engaged securely with the side rails thereof, is a head piece 6, the outer edge of which is curved or convexed to conform to the curvature of the inner wall of the body l, and said outer edge is provided with a cavity, as shown at 7, whereby the hand of the operator may be readily engaged with said head.
A removable head piece 8, identical in design to the head piece 7 is provided for the opposite end of the member 3, and in order to adjustably secure the same in position, the end transverse strip 9 on the frame is provided with a threaded central opening 10, through which extends the threaded shank of an adjusting bolt ll. The head of this bolt is disposed inwardly and the shank thereof, which extends through the strip 9, is adapted to be engaged with a bearing plate l2 carried on the inner edge of the head piece 8. Guide lugs 13 are also provided on the removable head piece 8, which enter sockets in the strip 9, thereby retaining the head member 8 in position during its adjustment, while applying the same to use.
In applying the device to use, the head member S is first engaged with the strip 9 so that the guide studs 13 thereby enter the sockets in said strip and the operator grasps said head pieces 6 and S by engaging the walls of the cavities therein to dispose the frame member within the body 1. The head piece 6 being rigid on the frame is first held in contact with the inner face of the wall of the body and the frame extended transversely thereacross, while the bolt 11 is adjusted in the threaded opening 10 to force the head member 8 outwardly until the outer curved edge of the same binds tightly against the inner wall of the body at a point diametrically opposite the point of engagement with the head 6. This bolt is turned until the frame or dasher is firmly and securely held in the body and the device is then ready for use. While have shovvn inthe drawing but a single dasher, as applied to the body, it Will be understood that as many o-f said dashers may be provided as desired, and it Will be appreciated that after such a dasher is once secured in position, the same is not adapted for casual disengagement, but may be readily and quickly removed, When desired.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eiiicient means for carrying out the objects oi' the invention and While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to per` form the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, What I Vclaim is l. A churn dasher consisting of a frame, head pieces'thereon having the outer edges thereof convexed, the conveXed edges of said head pieces being provided with cavities, and means to adjustably secure one of said head pieces on the frame.
2. A churn dasher comprising a frame,
3. A churn dasher comprising a framel composed of side bars and transverse connecting slats therefor, a head member rigidly secured to the one end of said frame, an additional head member removably engaged Wit-h the opposite end of said frame, and an adjusting bolt extending through the transverse slat at the last mentioned end of said frame adapted for contact With the additional head member to adjust the latter with respect to the frame, whereby the device may be frictionally held in the churn body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. Y BELLE BELLMAN.
