Description

du-lied 51am;
@einem dtliiw.
Letters Patent No. 106,149, dated August 9, 1870.
IMPRovBD DEVICE :Fon PACKING BOTTLES.
The Schedule Vreferred. to in these Lettersv Patent and making per: of the same To all whom 'it may concern.- l p .Be it knownpthat I, GEORGE (LFURBER, of Yreka,
'cunty of Siskiyou and State of California, vhave in-V vented a new and improved Gapv for Protecting Necks ot' Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the li'ollowiugis a full, clear, and Lcaract description thereof,
which will" enable qothers skilled in' the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification.
The obJect of this invention is to provide simple and velcie'nt means' for protecting the necks ofv bottles in forming-packagesofmedicines or other articles, liquids, or'compositions; and v ,It consists in a cap 4(itp'asteboard or other suitable materiahso formed as to inclose the neck ot' the bottle and rest on its top or nozzle., by means-ot which square or other shaped packages, rigid and of uniform size, may bepmade for transportation or sale, as will he vhereinafter 'more fully described.
In the accompanying drawingp Figure 1 represents a glass bottle, suchv as is ordinarily vused in putting up patent mediciues,-vvitl1 my improved cap'thercon, shown in vertical section.
Figure 2 represents thecap as it is cnt befbrelapping down the flaps nto the shoulder of the bottle.'
Similarletters of-reference indicate corresponding parts. 1
Therordiuary modeof protecting the necks of patent-medicine bottles, andforming 'packages of uniform size from end to end, is by placing a simple piece 'or' 'plate of pasteboard on top ofthe nozzle, equal in size to a cross-section of the bottle used.
This mode leaves-nothing- 'to protect the necks of' the bottles but the thin paper wrapper. The wrapf per frequently gets crushed, and the pasteboard plate aM- -v Vbroken down in the course of. transportation and han dlin Mgy cap is formed of pasteboard or similar material, made as represented in fig. 2, with four or more flaps, A, attached to or forming a part of the top plate or piece B.
This latter part is made to correspond in' size to the size of the bottle.
Cisa'oentral oriticefor the cork. The cork is suppoited. by the edge Iof this oritice.
' The aps A are bent down ontotheshoulder of the bottle, as represented in iig. 1. i This shoulder is inclined, lieveling, or rounded up to the neck, so that the end of the flap is supported iu-a position flush with'the side ofthe bottle. v The flaps may lap down onto the sides of the bot tle, but I prefer the plan shown, as it makes va ncater and a more symmetrical package.
To allow the pastcboard to break down and form a square corner, I make a out or slit in each, as seen at- 1), for the angle.
Having thus described my invention,
I 'claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patentl y 1.- In combination with the plate B, of pasteboard or other similar material, the flaps A, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
2. In combination with th'e plate B and aps A, the orifice G, for supporting the cork, substantially as shown and described.
" GEORGE G. FURBER.
