Description
R. H. SMITH. BLUE PRINT HOLDER 0R DRAWING HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED FEB.17, 1911.
1,061,335. Patented May 13, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT HENRY SMITH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BLUE-PRINT HOLDER 0R DRAWING-HOLDER.
Application filed February 17, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT HENRY SMITH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blue-Print Holders or Drawin -IIolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for blue prints or drawings, capable of holding either mounted or unmounted sheets, as required by the circumstances.
The device is intended for attachment to machine tools or other apparatus, or may be attached to a weighted base so as to stand upon a bench or desk.
The preferred embodiment of the device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device attached to a lathe and showing it supporting a mounted print; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation on a slightly enlarged scale of the holder proper holding an unmounted sheet; and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the mechanism as shown in Fig. 3.
To the lathe bed A is fixed a bracket B by means of screws O passing through the flange Z) of the bracket. A swinging arm I) is hinged to the bracket B by a screw E and carries at its outer end a hub or enlarge ment F in which is adjustably clamped a vertical standard or rod G, by means of a set screw H.
A cross bar J is vertically adjustable on the rod G and may be clamped at any desired height or angle by a set screw K. This cross bar is provided with a longitudinal groove J upon its upper face and a beveled front face J for a purpose which will later appear.
Sliding on the rod G above the cross bar J is a second weighted cross bar L which may or may not be of less length than the cross bar J and this cross bar L carries an inclined overhanging lip R of the general form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, which is capable of coacting with the face J of the cross bar J to clamp and hold a sheet of paper.
A flanged base M or a weighted base N may be substituted for the bracket and arm B, D, if preferred. To hold a mounted print P the cross bar J is adjusted to the proper Specification of Letters Patent.

height; the lower edge of the mounted print is placed in the groove J and the weighted bar L is lowered over the top of the sheet holding it against the rod Gr. (See Figs. 1 and 2). An unmounted sheet Q may be held by lowering the cross bar L into proximity to the cross bar J. The unmounted sheet is clamped between the lip R and the face J The pivot I permits the device to be swung around so as to accommodate the position of the drawing or card held thereby to that of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a support, the combination of a standard, and a pair of retaining members mounted thereon and adjustable toward and from each other, said members being formed with clamping surfaces, adapted to overlap to hold a flexible sheet when the members are in juxtaposition, and with means to engage opposite edges of a stiff card or the like inserted between said members, when they are separated.
2. In a support, the combination of a standard; a cross-bar carried thereby having a groove upon one face, and a gripping surface; and a second cross-bar slidably mounted on the standard, having a lip extending toward the first-named cross-bar adapted alternatively to enter into clamping relation with said gripping surface to clamp a sheet or to engage and retain an edge of a card or the like whose opposite edge is engaged in the groove of the first cross-bar.
3. In a support, the combination of an upright standard; a cross-bar adjustable vertically and axially thereon, having a groove in its upper face and an inclined front face; and a second crossbar slidably mounted on the standard above the first cross-bar and having an overhanging inclined portion adapted alternatively to enter into clamping relation with the inclined face of the first cross-bar to hold a sheet, or to engage and retain an edge of a card whose other edge is engaged in the groove of the first cross-bar.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT HENRY SMITH.
