EXTENSION-RACK FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL M. GRANDIER- RIN, a citizen of France, residing at Sag Harbor, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Extension-Rack, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an extension rack intended for photographers and adapted for photographic purposes.

This extension rack belongs to the category of racks such as those that are used by photographers for the pur oses of washing fixing developing or trying photographic plates.

A well known and commonly called sawbuck rack is being used for the purpose of drying negatives. Another well known and commonly called fixing-rack is being used for the purposes of washing and fixing negatives. Heretofore the above mentioned racks have failed to meet the needs of photographers and for the reasons hereinbelow set forth. The said saw-buck rack can not insure the safety of the plates if the said rack is handled in a rough manner as it would be resorted to if such a rack is to be used for developing fixing or washing photographic plates. The said so called fixing rack is not adapted to be adjusted for the reception of plates of different sizes at a time in a satisfactory manner.

Therefore my principal object is to overcome the above set forth inconveniences and I have succeeded in improving the old saw-buck and fixing racks and have transformed the same into a convenient apparatus that will meet the needs of photographers, for the same is adapted to be adjusted so as to receive and retain plates of different sizes at a time and that will hold the plates in such a safe manner so as to insure the plates against common accidents should the said rack be used for any photographic purposes.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved extension rack showing the same being adj usted for the reception of four different sizes of plates. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the base member 4, showing the back or rear side thereof and showing the preferred manner of mounting the extension members in operative position thereto. which are to be mounted 011 the extension members. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a preferred form of extension members.

The present invention consists of a main frame 1 which frame is formed to provide at the side 2 thereof grooves or furrows 3 which are adapted for the reception of the edges of photographic plates, this grooved side may satisfactorily be formed of a corrugated sheet of suitable metal such as brass if so desired. Furthermore the said frame is formed to provide a member 4: which is preferably formed to provide on one side thereof grooves or furrows 4 which are adapted for the reception of the edges of photographic plates and is arranged to the main frame so as to serve the purpose of a resting base for the plates. Thus far described the said frame may be constructed in any suitable manner. The said member 4 preferably has oppositely to its grooves suitable guide ways such as those mdicated by numbers 12 12 12 12 in Fig. 2 and also suitable set screws such as 13 14: 15 17. The said guide ways are adapted to guide and re tain their respective extension members in their respective and operative position and the said set screws are adapted for clamping their respective'extension members to their adjusted position as it will be understood. These extension members while they may be constructed in many different manners are preferably constructed of a form as is illustrated in Fig. 4 or as is shown in Fig. l illustrated as extension member 5. The said extension members are preferably formed to provide one or more slots such as 5 5 in Fig. 4. In operative position the said extension members are mounted and movably fitted to said member 4 and as illustrated in Fig. 2 the screws extend through the slot provided in the extension members, (for reference see screw 13 and extension member 5 and a suitable thumb nut such as 17 is fitted to said screws and is adapted to be operated so as to clamp their respective extension member to their adjusted operative position (see extension member 5 which is clamped into position by thumb nut 17). In the construction of small sized apparatus the said extension members would preferably be constructed so as to appear as extension member 5 in Fig. 1 and as illustrated this extension member 5 is formed to provide grooves or furrows 6 which are adapted for the reception of the edges of photographic plates, and this grooved portion could satisfactorily be formed by corrugat-ing a portion of said extension member or by securing rigidly thereto a suitable portion of corrugated metal.

In the construction of large sized apparatus the extension members would preferably be constructed of the form illustrated in Fig. 4 and Whereon a suitable portion of rack which may if desired be formed of a corrugated sheet of metal may be movably mounted as will be understood. It is obvious that the grooves provided in said members are adapted for the reception of the edges of the photographic plates and these adjustable members are formed to pro vide a clamping set screw at the rear side thereof (see 19, Fig. 3) or 16 in Fig. 2. In operative position these grooved portions are mounted on their respective extension members in a manner so that the screw threaded ends such as 19 provided therefor extend through the slots provided in said extension members and said threaded ends are provided with a suitable thumb nut such as 16 which are operable to clamp their respective grooved member to their adjusted position upon their respective extension member as is illustrated in Fig. 2 whereas the grooved member 6 is mounted and removably secured to extension member by the thumb nut 16. Furthermore these grooved members may be formed to provide suitable guide ways such as 18 which are disposed oppositely of said grooves and adapted so that the said grooved members may be guided and held in their respective position during their adjustment upon their respective extension member as may readily be understood. This construction is such that these grooved members are operable for an up and down or vertical movement and vertical adjustment upon their respective extension member and the same are adapted to be clamped in operative position at any height thereupon as is illustrated in Fig. 1 whereas the grooved members 6 6 6 are clam ed to the extension members 5 5 5 at di erent heights thereupon. This construction is such that the said extension members are operable to regulate the distance between the grooved side of the main frame and the grooved portion of said extension members and the same are adapted to be clamped to their adjusted and operative position so as to provide such a distance between the grooved portions of the apparatus to suit the taste of the operator, and as is obvious such an arrangement will permit plates of any size between certain limits to be admitted between the grooved portions of the apparatus and the said plates will be held therebetween in such a safe manner as to insure the said plates against common accidents during the handling of said extension rack. This is fully illustrated in Fig. 1 whereas each of the extension members 5 5 5 5 are adjusted so as to hold a plate of different size which are indicated by dotted lines 8 9 10 11. Furthermore in large sized apparatus the main frame of my extension rack could be formed to provide resting members such as 7 7 which are adapted so as to provide a resting point for the extension members so as to prevent the same from vibrating backward, but such resting members are dispensable in small sized apparatus whereas the side of the main frame may be utilized for the purpose as it will readily be understood. The said extension rack may also be provided with suitable handles such as 20 which are adapted to facilitate the handling thereof.

Having thus described my invention and it being understood that changes in the recise embodiment of invention hereinbe ore disclosed may be made Within the scope of the claims Without departing from the spirit of invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, what I claim is 1. The combination in an extension rack composed of a frame which is formed to provide furrows at one side thereof, of a base member 4 preferably afiixed to said frame, of a plurality of extension members movably fitted to one side of said base member which are formed to provide a furrowed portion and are operable to regulate the distance between the grooved side of the frame and the grooved portion of said extension members, for the purposes set forth.

The combination in an extension rack, a main frame, a member forming one side of said frame which has furrows for the reception 'of the edges of photographic plates, a base member 1 which may have grooves for the reception of the edges of photographic plates, a plurality of extension members movably fitted to said base member embodying suitable guideways and suitable clamping set screws disposed upon the base member 4? oppositely to its grooves, substantially as described.

The combination in an extension rack, a main frame having furrows at one side thereof, a base member to said frame, embodying suitable extension members movably fitted to said base member, said extension members being formed to provide a grooved portion for the reception of the edges of photographic plates, guideways dis posed upon said base member and adapted to guide and retain their respective ex tension members into their operative positions, a plurality of set screws disposed upon said base member, and adapted to clamp their respective extension members in their adjusted positions upon the base member 4 substantially as described.

The combination in an extension rack, a main frame having furrows at one side thereof handles to the main frame, and ada ted to facilitate the handling of the said extension rack, a base member l affixed to said frame, and adapted so as to form a resting base for the lower extremities of photographic plates embodying suitable extension members movably mounted on said base member 4, set screws upon said base member, each of said set screws being operable to clamp its respective extension member in its adjusted position, said extension members being formed to provide suitable furrows for the reception of the edges of photographic plates, and which extension members are operable to regulate PAUL M.
