UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. SEYMOUR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
CURTAIN AND SHADE-ROLLER SUPPORT.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Snrnoun, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain and Shade- Roller Supports, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to supporting devices; and, while it may be embodied in constructions adapted for various purposes, it is more particularly applicable to curtain and shade roller supports.
Objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character referred to in which supports for a shade roller and a rod for a curtain are furnished; which can be adjustably secured to the sides of the window frame; which can be adjusted to fit different sizes of windows; whose members are secured together in such manner that the entire device may be readily adjusted vertically; and to provide a device of the character aforesaid which shall be simple and durable in construction, easily adjusted, highly efficient in operation, and whose parts are few, conveniently arranged, and may be duplicated. These and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and in part be made clear from the following description.
My invention consists in the novel parts, improvements, combinations, and features of construction herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, which is referred to herein and forms a part hereof, is illustrated an embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of an embodiment of my invention, the same being shown as attached to a window casing and as having a shade and shade roller mounted therein; and Figs. 2 and-i are side elevations of details.
A curtain and shade roller support constructed in accordance with one feature of my invention includes in combination, side bars or bracket members, means for adjustably securing said side bars to a window frame, an extensible curtain rod, said rod being rigidly secured at its opposite ends to said side bars, and means for supporting a shade roller.

Serial No. 494,594.
structed in accordance with certain other 'leatl'lres of my invention includes in combination, side bars or bracket members, said bars being offset at their upper ends and said offset portions having apertures to receive the spring and pivot ends respectively of a shade roller, guide members adapted to be fastened to a window frame, said side bars being slidably mounted in said guide members, thumb screws for securing said side bars in said guide members, a handle at the lower end of each side bar, and a telescopic curtain rod rigidly secured at its 0pposite ends to said side bars, said bars being bent inwardly from the window frame at their upper ends.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, the embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a pair of side bars or bracket members 1, which are shown as attached to a window frame 2. While said bars may be secured to the window casing in various ways, preferably and as shown, guide members 3 are securely fastened to the said frame and the bars 1 are slidably mounted therein, being held in any desired position by means of thumb screws 4. To facilitate the adjustment of said side bars, each said bar is provided at its lower end with a handle 5.
A feature of the invention resides in the means provided for supporting a curtain rod. lVhilc this means may take various forms and be arranged in various ways, preferably and as shown, said side bars are each bent at their upper ends so as to project inwardly a suitable distance from the window frame. To the end of one of said side bars is rigidly secured as by riveting one end an interiorly threaded collar 6 projectin; in the direction of the other side bar, and to the upper end of the other side bar is rigidly secured a member 7 as by riveting one end, preferably exteriorly threaded, projecting in the direction of the collar 6. A hollow rod 8, having one end interiorly threaded, is screwed to the member 7, while a rod 9, which may be solid, is exteriorly threaded at one end and screwed into the collar 6. The hollow rod 8 is of a suitable bore to permit the rod 9 to slide in said rod 8, and said rods 8 and 9 are of suitable respective lengths to permit the device to be adjusted to different widths of windows. The curtain is hung upon the telescopic rod formed by the members 8 and 9 and will hang clear of the shade hereinafter referred to by reason of the projecting upper ends of the side bars, as heretofore explained, It will also be noted that by reason of the rigid connections, at its opposite ends, of the telescopic curtain rod to the side bars, it will only be necessary to grasp the handle of one side bar to lower at will the entire frame formed by said side bars and curtain rod, bot-h thumb screws l being properly manipulated.
Another feature of the invention resides in the means provided for supporting a shade roller. WVhile, so far as certain other features of the invention are concerned, said shade support may be variously formed and arranged, preferably and as shown, the said side bars are suitably offset at their upper ends in a direction toward each other and at a suitable distance below the projecting or bent ends which support the curtain rod, one of said offset portions 11 having a round aperture 12 adapted to receive the pivot end of a shade roller, and the other of said offset portions 13 having an orifice 14, preferably rectangular, adapted to receive the spring end of the shade roller. In the embodiment illustrated, I have shown these apertures 12 and 14 in a form which will require the insertion of the shade roller in place before the application of the side bars to the window frame and which will require the detachment of said side bars from the frame before the removal of the shade roller can be effected, the idea being to provide for the attachment of all the parts as a unitary structure to a window frame at a single operation and to guard against the displacement of the curtain rod or shade holder after attachment. It will thus be noted that to remove the shade roller it will be necessary to displace the side bars laterally with relation to each other, and this, of course, can only be done after said bars have been de tached from the window frame.
It will be seen that by reason of the conto be lowered so as to permit unobstructed ventilation when the window is opened at the top; which is simple and durable in con: struction; which is highly efiicient in operation and easily manipulated; and which, while neat and unobtrusive in design and appearance, yet lends itself easily to fanciful effects, if desired. Other advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
My invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the precise construction shown and described nor to any particular construction by which the same has been or may be carried into effect, as many changes may e made in the details thereof without 16- parting from the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
I claim:
