To (In whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARK LEIBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im provements in Combined Supports for Shade-Rollers and Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to improvements in shade and curtainbrackets, and the object of the invent-ion is to provide an adjustable bracket for supporting curtainpoles and shade-rollers of different lengths, to adapt the bracket for use on windowframes and in alcoves or door-ways of various sizes.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1, is a perspective view of a shade and curtain-bracket embodying this invention; and, Fig. 2, is a rear elevation of a portion of the device shown in Fig. 1.

Referring specifically to the drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes the body portion of the device which is preferably made of rigid sheet metal and in the form of a flattened tube and with the lateral edges 2 and 3 of the strip of metal from which the body-portion is formed, slightly spaced apart to provide between them a longitudinallyextending opening or slot. One of these edges, preferably 2, is provided with two series of teeth 5 and 6 extending inwardly from near the ends of the member to the center and with the edges of the teeth of one series inclined in a direct-ion opposite to the teeth of the other series, said teeth providing notches 7 between them for a purpose to be later described.

In order to support the body member 1, two or more ears 8 are out from the strip of which the body-portion is formed and bent upwardly and each is provided with a verti- Cally-extending slot 9 through which may be passed hold-fast devices 10 for supporting the device and holding it in an adjusted position so that the shade or curtain may hang vertically or parallel with the window frame or door-frame in connection with which the same is used.

Slidably mounted in the tubular body 1 portion 1 are two slides 11 and 12, with the outer ends thereof provided with abruptlybent portions 17 formed at right-angles with the main portions of the slides. In one of the bent portions 17 is a. vertical slot 13 and in the other slide is an aperture 14, these two constituting means for sustaining opposite ends of a shade-roller. The ends of the portions 17 are then further extended by giving them onequarter turn at 15 and their ends are fashioned intosupporting hooks 16 for sustaining a curtain pole.

The inner end of the slide 12 is provided with an opening consisting of a vertical slot 18 connecting with a horizontal wedgeshaped slot 19 in which is placed a resilient member 20 constituting a catch for engaging in the notches 7 between the teeth 5 for holding the slide 12 against unintentional longitudinal movement. The resilient member 20 embodies a vertical portion 21 which stands upright in the slot 18 and from this portion 21 extends a horizontal portion 22 at right-angles with the portion 21 and at the terminus of the'horizontal portion 22 is a hand-grasp which engages in the notches as just described. In order to releasethe resilient member from engagement with the teeth the free end thereof is depressed to clear the teeth and the member 12 is then freely slidable in the body-portion 1.

The inner end of the slide 11 is provided with an opening similar to the opening in the end of the member 12 and is provided with a resilient member 23, the free end 24 of which engages in the notches 7 between the teeth 6 thereby locking the slide 11 against longitudinal movement.

In practice it is contemplated to adjust the length of the device approximately by manipulation of the catch 24: on the slide 11 and afterward any minor adjustment of the device is accomplished by the means of the spring catch 20 which being provided with a hand-grasp is more easily reached for the purpose of slightly separating the slides 11 and 12 to remove the shade-holder when desired.

It will be noted that the teeth 5 and 6 are provided with oppositely disposed inclined edges extending in opposite directions, so that if it is desired at any time to narrow the space between the ends of the slides before utilizing a short shade-roller or ourtain-pole either of the slides may be pushed inwardly without disengaging the spring catches 20 and 23, the catches sliding over the inclined edge of the teeth, but it it is desired to extend the curtain shade one of the spring catches must be disengaged from the teeth to permit this latter adjustment.

I claim:

1. In a shade and curtain-bracket, the combination with a body portion comprising a flattened tubular member having a longitudinal opening or slot in its rear face, one of the edges of said slot provided with a plurality of notches, of a pair of slides adapted to be slidably received in said body portion, the outer ends of said slides provided with abruptly-bent portions, said portions provided wit-h bearings for a shaderoller, said abruptlybent portions further provided with extending portions constituting hooks to support a curtainpole, the inner ends of said slides provided with openings, said openings constituting holding means, spring catches mounted in said holding-means and engaging in said notches for adjustably holding said slides against longitudinal movement.

2. In a shade and curtain-bracket, the combination with a body-portion comprising a flattened tubular member having a longitudinal opening or slot in one of its faces, one of the edges of said slot provided with two series of teeth, said teeth having in clined faces, the inclination of the faces of the teeth of one series being oppositely inclined With respect to the similar portions of the teeth of the other series, of a pair of slides slidably mounted in said body-portion, the outer ends of said slides provided with abruptly-bent portions, said portions provided with bearings for a shade-roller, said abruptly-bent portions further provided with hooks to support a curtain-pole, the inner ends of said slides provided with spring catches, the spring catches on one slide adapted to engage the notches between the teeth of one series and the spring catches on the other slide adapted to engage the notches between the teeth of the other series, said catches serving to hold said slides against longitudinal movement.

3. In a shade and curtain-bracket, the combination with a body-portion comprising a flattened tubular member having a longitudinal opening or slot in one of its faces, one of the edges of said slot provided with a plurality of notches, of a pair of slides slidably mounted in said body-portion, the outer ends of said slides provided with bent portions to provide bearings for a shade roller, said bent portions further provided with hooks to support a curtain pole, the inner end of one of said slides provided with means for locking it against longitudinal movement, the other slide provided at its inner end with a spring catch adapted to engage said notches for adjustably holding said latter slide against longitudinal movement.
