and Lifting Lids forDesks, of which the.
following is a specification.
This invention relates to extension and lifting lids for desks and more particularly for school desks, the object beingto provide a desk top which is so constructed that the same can be'drawn outwardly so as to in- I crease the size of the same and in this position can be raised so as to reach the interior of the desk.
Another object of the invention is to provide a desk-which is provided with a sectional top, the sections being removable with respect to a each other so that the central outer section can be swung into an inclined position so as to form a drawing board.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the lid or top in its normal position so that the lid can be swung upwardly as in the ordinary manner of opening a desk of this character now in use.
Another object of the invention is to -provide means for locking the pivoted section of the desk with respect'to the hinged section so that the inclination of the pivoted section can be ad'usted when swung ugin'to he position to e used as a drawing oard.
'With these various objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top' plan view of my im- 1 proved desk. F ig. 2 is a transverse section showing, the movable section swung into position to be used as a drawing board. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing the lid or top drawn outwardly so as to increase the size of the same and showing the lid raised so that the interior of the desk can be reached. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of my improved desk showing the lid or cover in its normal position. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the top of lid. Fig.
.7 is a detail section through a portion of the body of the desk and the slidable section. Fig. 8 is a detail sideelevation of a portion of the desk showing the locking rod and the manner of mounting the same. Fig. 9 is a detallend view of "the drawing board section of the top showing the cle'at at the end moved.
into position to form a stop.
In carrying out my improved invention, A indicates the body of my improved desk which is mounted on suitable legs A as shown and secured to the back of the body of thedesk is an angled bracket B which supports a fixed shelf .0 having a longitudinal pencil groove C formed therein and an opening 0 forming-a socket to receive an ink well, said shelf havingits under face beveled corresponding to the inclination of .the upper edge of the body of the desk for the purpose hereinafter fully described. The sides of the desk are provided with grooves D upon-their inner faces in which extend the tongues D of guide members D which are secured upon the underside of a slidable section E'which is adapted to be normally held under the shelf C by a pivoted latch F mounted in a suitable bracket F fixed to the back of the desk and adapted to engage'a catch G secured to the underside of the slidable section E, said. section being provided with a vertical bore E upon which is slidably mounted a pin (ir adapted to engage the latch F for throwing the same out of engagement with the catch G and it will be seen that when the section E is moved into the position shown in F ig. 3 the latch will engage the same and lock the section firmly in position. For operating the pin G I provide the shelf C with a swing actuated button H which is provided with a shank H adapted to engage the pin G and be pressed downwardly so as to force the pin G" into engagement with the latch so as to disengage the same from the catch.
Connected to the lower edge of the section E by hinges. I is the frame portion of the lid of the desk which is provided ,with a central notch or cut out -portion as clearly shown at I having tongue portions l formed on its inner side edges as clearly shown which are adapted to co-act with grooves J and the removable section J of the desk lid proper, said section being provided with a groove J upon each side edge over which is secured a plate K which is providedwith a bifurcated portion K which extends over the groove J and a slotted portion K which extends over the groove 1" so as to protect the grooves J J 2 and slidably mounted within the groove J 2 is a pin L which is pivotally mounted within a bracket M'countersunk in the adjacent side edges of the frame section I and itwill be seen that by this manner of mounting the section J with respect to the frame section I,
the section J can be moved with respect to the section I'as-will be hereinafter fully described. The inner edge of the notch I of the section or frame I is beveled as' clearly shown at I and the edge of the section J is forced in the grooves J so as'to hold the sections in their proper positions with respect to each other whereby the section or frame I can be. swung upwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 in order to interior of the desk.
For holding the section J of the desk at the proper angle when the same is moved into position as shown in Fig. 2 I provide a flexible bar N which is pivotallyconnected to the'section J as shown at N and extends through a guide member Q secured to the underside of the frame I and is provided with a series'of notches N in'one side edge which is adapted to' be engaged by a slidably mounted locking rod P which extends outwardly through a guid-way Q formed in theside of the body of the desk which is provided with cut out portions as clearly shown at Q, adapted to receive the locking rod 1? when the same is drawn outwardly with the lid of the desk and it will be seen that by disengaging the locking rod P from the flexible bar N the lid section J can be drawn outwardly until the tongues I of the section I are disengaged from the grooves J and by pressing downwardly on the lid the same can be thrown up into the angle as clearly shown or any angle desired and by forcing the rod B inwardly it can be locked.
in that position.
Secured to the lower edge of the section I is a strip It which is provided with inclined groovesR' terminating in upwardly projecting sockets B through which screws 3 am adapted to pass for securing the same to the section this manner of mounting the strip R and by moving the same laterallv so as to cause the screws to travel in the slots It and then dropping the pins into the sockets R the reach the J and it will be seen that by strip can be locked up into the position shown in Fig. 1 so as to form a'stop or cleat for the sectionJ when the same is swung up into the position to beused as a drawing board. g f
The section b is provided with a notch E adapted to co-act with the ink well when moved into thefposition as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and secured upon the frame I are section 'J so as to form additional supporting -means whereby all danger of the section J moving or yielding in any manner when being used as an ordinary desk is prevented. From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a desk lid which is formed of a plurality of sections one of which is slidably mounted with respect to the body of the desk and to which is pivotally connected a frame section forming a lid cleats S which extend outwardly under the proper so that the same can be swung upwardly in order to reach the interior of the desk, said frame'section carrying a slidab'le 'and movable section which is so mounted with respect to the frame section that the same can be thrown upwardly and locked into any angle desired so as to be used for drawing purposes.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a-desk having a horizontal portion, of a slida'ble section adapted'to slide beneath said fixed portion, a catch carried by the rear of the desk and within the desk for the purpose of locking said slidable portion, in normal position, means working through the fixed por tion and the slidable portion for disengaging said catch, a framevhinged to said sl'idable portion and adapted to swing upwardly and rearwardly and a pivoted section mounted in said frame and adapted to be swung downwardly and forwardly, and means for locking the pivoted section to .the sides,of the frame.
2. The combination with a desk body lfaving a fixed shelf, of a sectional lid slidably' mounted on said body and extending under said shelf, a catch carried by said lid, a latch carried by the body adapted to engage said catch, a pin carried by said lid for engaging said latch and a spring actuated button carried by the fixed shelf for engaging said pin;
