FOLDING UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913.
Application filed December 18, 1312. Serial N 0. 737,504.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Framers F. HILDITOH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding um brellas, and the objects of my invention are to provide an umbrella that can be reduced in its longitudinal dimension whereby it can be easily carried in the pocket or as a small parcel, and to provide an umbrella that has a foldable stick and foldable ribs that present a rigid structure when the umbrella is in use.
Further bjects of my invention are to provide a foldable rib structure that can be used in connection with a telescopic or foldable umbrella stick, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing. wherein Figure l is a side elevation of an umbrella stick and one rib and spreader, the
remaining ribs and Spreaders being elimi-' nated for clearness of illustration. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the stick and rib folded, Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the stick, Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan of a portion of a rib, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on the line VI-VI of Fig. 5, Fig. 7 is a similar view taken on the line VH-VH I of Fig. 5, and Fig. 8 is a similar view taken on the line VIIIVIII of Fig. 5.
An umbrella. stick in accordance with this invention comprises a tubular handle section 1 and a tubular tip section Movable in these sections is a sectional rod 3, the sections of said rod being pivotally connected by a link 4, with one of said sections connected by a link 5 to a handle 6. The tubular sections 1 and 2 can be shifted relatively to the sectional rod 3 and the handle 6,
whereby the stick can be folded, as shown in Fig. 2.
The tip section 2 has a notch 7 for an inner rib section 8 that is channel-shaped. The outer end of the rib section 8 has a hinge member 9 to which is connected a hinge member 10 carried by an outer channel rib section 11, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Movably mounted in the inner rib section 8 is the loop 12 of a strap 18 and pivotally connected to the ends of said strap, as at 14 is the outer bifurcated end of a spreader 15, which is connected in the usual and ordinary manner to a runner 16 slidably mounted upon the stick. This runner is held at a fixed position relatively to the stick by ordinary catches 17.
The loop 12 of the strap 13 is of sufficient length to extend into the outer rib section 11, as shown in Fig. 5 and the inner end of the loop 12 has a connecting bar 18 supporting the inner end of a latch 19. The latch 19 has the outer end thereof provided with a tooth 20 that engages the outer end 21 of the loop 12 to lock said loop within the rib sections 8 and 11 whereby the same will present a rigid connection between said rib sections. The latch 19, adjacent to the tooth 20 thereof has a depending handle or button 22 and this button can be pressed upon when it is desired to move the tooth 20 out of engagement with the outer rib section 11 and shift the loop 12 entirely into the inner rib section 8. This is essential when the rib sections 8 and 11 are to be folded, as shown in Fig. 2, at which time the spreader 15 assumes a position approximately parallel with the umbrella stock, as shown in Fig. 2.
It is thought that the utility and manner of folding the umbrella will be apparent without further description, and it is obvious that the ordinary and well known type of cover can be secured to the notch 7 and the outer end of "the rib sections 11 whereby said cover will be folded simultaneously with the ribs of the umbrella.
What I claim is In a folding umbrella the combination with a stick, and a runner movable upon said stick, of an outer and inner rib section supported by said stick, said outer and inner rib sections being hinged together whereby said outer rib seotion can fold against said inner rib section, a spreader supported by said runner, a strap open to provide a loop slidably mounted in said inner rib by said latch to facilitate moving said latch section and having its ends pivotaiiy conout of engagement with sald outer rlb secnected to said spreader to provide a geat tion.
connection whereby the outer end of said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 spreader can be shifted toward the inner end in the presence of two Witnesses.
of said inner rib section, a connecting bar FRANCIS F HILDITCH connected to the inner end of the loop of the strap, a latch supported by said bar and Witnesses:
provided With a tooth adapted to engage MAX H. SROLOVITZ, 10 said outer rib section, and a handle carried KATHERINE ERRETT.
