To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ELLSBERRY Newer and ammi: Newer, citizens of the United States, residing at Reedley, in the county of Fresno, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lnkld ells; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ink wells and more es pecially to that class adapted to be secured to desks, tables or the like.
An object of this invention is the provision of an ink well which will be of such nature that the interior thereof can be sealed against entrance of air which causes the evaporation of the contents thereof.
Another object of this invention is provision of means whereby the said ink well can be securely held in its proper position relative to the desk or table against any undesired displacement.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an ink well which will comprise but very few parts of such nature and construction that they will be held against rattling and also against removal by an unauthorized person.
A still further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use and readily operated.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinaftermore fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

sultant shoulder 13, disposed in planes substantially parallel to the opposite sides of the said desk or table 10 The portion 1.2 of the opening 11 is slightly tapered clownwardly and provided with threads 1d for a purpose to be later disclosed.
Our improved ink well 15 consists of a cylindrical body or receptacle 16 formed intermediate its ends with downwardly tapering threads 17 for engagement with the threads 1%, whereby when the said body or receptacle 16 is screwed therein, the threads 14 and 17 will bind and hold the said ink well 15 against any undesired rotation. As shown in the drawing, the receptacle 16 is constructed from glass which is preferred, but it is stated in this connection that the same may be formed from any suitable substance. The upper end of the receptacle 16 is reduced at 18 and formed with exterior threads 19, the said reduced portion 19 producing a circular shoulder 20 which produces a stop for the lower end of the closing cap 21 which is threaded as at 22 for engagement with the threads 19. The lower end of the cap 21 is provided with a circumscribing flange 23 which engages the shoulder 13 and limits the downward movement of the said cap. The greatest diameter of the cap 21 including the flange 23 is substantially equal to the diameter of the opening 11. which permits of the vertical movement of the cap therethrough.
A non-rotatable disk 24: constructed from cork or other suitable flexible sealing material is secured within the cap 21 and is formed at one side thereof with an opening 25 which registers with an opening 26 formed in the adjacent side of the cap 21.
Recesses 27 are formed in the opposite sides of the receptacle 16 at the upper eX- tremity thereof and are adapted to receive he diametrically opposed lugs 28 formed upon the periphery of a circular closure 29 which is disposed within the upper end of the receptacle 16. One side of this plate or closure 29 is cutaway as at 30 to provide access to the interior of the receptacle 16.
Obviously upon the rotation of the cap 21 the openings 25 and 26 are moved to register with the cut away portion 30 which permits ready access to the interior of the receptacle 16, but upon a partial rotation of the said cap 21 these openings will be moved out of registration with the said cut away portion 30 and the disk 24: forced against the upper end of the cap and adjacent end of the receptacle 16 which securely seals the interior of the latter against the entrance of air.
A set screw 31 is threaded in the desk 10 adjacent the opening 11 in such manner that the upper face of the head 32 thereof will lie flush with the upper side of the desk 10 and one edge of the said head 32 projects into the opening for contact with the upper side of the flange 23 whereby the rotation of the cap 21 will be limited to substantially one half of a revolution.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be manifest that a device of the nature described is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device. It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described this invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a receptacle having a reduced and threaded end producing a resultant shoulder, of a closure contained within one end of the receptacle and held against rotation, said closure provided with an opening, a cap threaded upon the receptacle for rotation thereon and contact with said shoulder, a sealing disk attached to the cap, the cap and the disk provided with an opening to be brought in registry with the opening in the closure upon rotation of the cap.
2. The combination in an ink-well of a receptacle having attaching threads formed thereon and a reduced end portion producing a resultant shoulder, a non-rotatable closure supported in one end of the receptacle and having one edge cut away to form a passage, a cap threaded on the reduced end portion of the receptacle and provided with an opening adapted to register with the opening in the closure, a flexible sealing member attached to the cap and havingan opening registering with the opening in the cap, said member adapted to seal the interior of the receptacle upon rotation of the cap, means for supporting the receptacle and means for limiting the rotation of the cap.
3. The combination in a support having an opening formed therein, said opening being reduced, tapered toward one end and internally threaded, said reduced portion of the opening producing a resultant shoulder, a receptacle disposed within said opening and provided with tapered threads for engagement with the threaded portion of the opening, the upper end of said receptacle being reduced and threaded, said reduced portion producing a resultant shoulder disposed in the plane of the before mentioned shoulder, a closure disposed in the mouth of the receptacle, lugs formed upon said closure and engaging recesses formed in the receptacle, said closure being cut away at one side producing a passage, .a cap threaded upon the reduced end of the receptacle, a flange formed upon the lower end of the cap, said flange and adjacent portion of the cap contacting with the shoulders, a flexible sealing member disposed within the cap, said cap and sealing member having alining openings formed therein, said openings adapted to register with the passage, and a set screw threaded in the support and projecting into the major end of the opening formed in the support for contact with the flange of the cap and limiting the upward rotary move ment of the latter.
