T all whom it may can Be it linown'that l, JOHN CARTWRIGHT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga. and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Means for Attaching and- .llemoving GrasMantles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for attaching inverted gas mantles to the burner and also for removing the mantle therefrom.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the above characteijwhich will enable a person to attach or place an inverted mantle in position without danger of breaking it, as is often the case when attaching the mantle in the usual manner.
T he invention consists of certain details of construction, which in the preferred eniloodiinent thereof are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in order that the same may be clearly understood.
The novel features of the invention will he distinctly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings like characters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 illustrates a gas burner with an ordinary inverted mantle in position such as may be attached or removed by means of the present invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective elevation of a device representing my invention, and Fig". 3 is asectional plan view 33 of Fig. 1, the device also being shown. M
Referring to the drawings, '1 represents an ordinary gas burner having the usual porcelain tip 2 ivhich'is provided with a plurality'o t radial supports 3 for carrying the invertedmantle l. Said mantle is of the ordinary type, having a plurality of inwardly projecting radial nil'is 5 for resting in the supports 3, and a like number of outwardly pri'ijeeting; radial arms 6 by which the mantle is handled.
Usually the gas burners are out of convenient reach, and as is well known, theiiiantles being delicate, soon burn out and otten require to he replaced hy -iiew ones. When attachinginverted man les such as indicated by l to the supports 3 of the amass FOR ATTACHI'NG anti Specification of letters Eateiit. Application filed Septemlier fld, 1912.
EEMOVING GASQHANTLE3 Patented Serial No. 722,152.
pose of this invention is to provide a de vice by means of which the old mantlen'iay be removed without the necessity of mounting upon a chair or taking an elevated position and a new mantle replaced by a son standing on the door without danger oil breaking the inantle.
The device consists of a cup or cylindrical shell 7 preferably formed oi?- suitable sheet material. The upper edge or rim '3 of the cup 2 is provided with a plurality of rec-- tangiilai' recesses 9, of suitable width and depth and so positioned as to freely receive the'radial arms 6 of the mantle. The cup or cylindrical shell 7 to completely inclose the mantle and atlord the. necessary protection.
i The device may consist of: the caper eyllIlClllCi\l shell 7 only if desired, or provided with a handle for more convenient manipulation, in which case there depends from the lower edge of the cup orv cylindrical shell 7, a pair of inwardly inclined legs 10 which are connected to a socket: collar 11 for receiving-a suitable handle When the mantle has become burned outand it is desired to replace it by a new one, the cup or cylindrical shell 7" is raised by means of the handle 12 to inclose the mantle and its recesses 9 are made to the arms (5 of the mantle. In this way the nihs of the mantle may he raised from their supi ports, and by properly turning the liai idle they will be swung clear of the supports and the mantle can then be lowered. A new mantle may then be replaced in the cup orcylindrical shell and attached to the gas burner supports without danger hreali? ing it as will be readily understood.
Although the device illustrated and described will satisfactorily serve the purposes for which it is intended, is to be uncle stood that slight changes in the construction may he made within the scope of the claim.
Havingdescribed my invention, What it claim is:
A device of the class described comprising a cylindrical shell the cylindrical. shell hav mg rectangular recesses in its upper end e for Itreely receiving the arms of an ini cLu-cfii burner,- they are often broken; and the pun pep" is of suilicient length gas mantle whereby the cylindrical shell may be easily conneetecl to the mantle and also cause the same to be rotated therewith, legs depending from the lower end edge of the cylindrical shell, :1 socket collar carried by the legs, and a handle fixed lnt0 said socket collar, snhstantially as dBSCllbBd.
