JAMES T. LOOMIS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
WHIRLIGIG.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES T. Looiuls, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVhirligigs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to whirligigs, an object of the invention being to provide a toy of this character in which the revolving body will be constructed of fiat ring form which when revolved under the operation of the actuating'cord will be made to assume the shape of a continuous glass globe.
Another object of the invention is to provide a whirligig wherein the revolving body will possess a highly brilliant surface onto which may be reflected various colors so that the globe will be differently colored and extremely pleasing to the eye of the operator.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application, and in which like letters of ref erence indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy. Fig. 2 is a section through the revolving body showing the manner of connecting the ends together. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the colored disk.
The toy comprises a revolving body 1 which is preferably in the form of a flat ring constructed of metal and provided, both interiorly and exteriorly with highly brilliant surfaces. Such surfaces may be treated in mercury to become mirror like, they may be nickel plated or polished in any suitable well known manner so that the body in revolving will assume the shape of a transparent glass globe. Said body has one of its terminals 2 provided with a tongue 3 while the opposite terminal 4 of the body is provided with a slot 5 which is adapted to receive and accommodate the tongue 3 so as to hold the body in complete ring form. The actuating member 6 is in form of a continuous endless cord having its runs extending through a pair of passages in each side of the body, while outwardly of the body the cord is provided with hand loops 8 that may be engaged by the hands of the operator Specification of Letters Patent.

and manipulated whereby the different runs of the cord will become intertwisted or wrapped around one another. In this manner it is evident that after the different runs of the cord are properly twisted draft can be applied to the opposite end portions of the cord so as to bring the twisted portions under the required tension necessary to impart to the body 1 rotary motion, first in one direction and then in another. The fact that the body 1 is relatively thin in thickness and broad in width and of a highly brilliant nature gives to the article that which is necessary to produce the hereinbefore described transparent globular condition.
The intermediate parallel portions 9 of the cord lie wholly within the margin of the body 1 and as illustrated said intermediate portions are threaded through spaced passages 10 of a disk 11. The opposite sides of this disk are divided in sector like spaces 12 which are preferably differently colored. The disk is disposed at right angles to the axis of the revolving body 1 and in view thereof the different colors of the disk will be reflected to the brilliant surfaces of the body 1 when the latter is revolved. In this manner the body is variegated in color which, together with the apparent transparent condition of the body when the latter revolves produces a most pleasing effect.
I claim 1. A toy comprising a revolving body having a mirrored surface, a differently colored member located within the body, and an actuating cord for revolving the body around said member.
2. A toy comprising a mirrored ring, means for revolving the ring, and a colored member carried by said means and located within said member.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
