CORD TWIST SPINNING TOY Filed Jan. 9, 1968 INVENTOR. [Ea/v 9. BAA/DY T TURNZ'Y United States Patent 3,501,860 CORD TWIST SPINNING TOY Leon D. Bandy, 1652 E. Roeser Road, Apt. 2, Phoenix, Ariz. 85040 Filed Jan. 9, 1968, Ser. No. 696,562 Int. Cl. A63h l /32 US. Cl. 46-62 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A toy having a string actuated whirling disc surrounded by a transparent sphere having a rubber band attached to the inside of the sphere arranged to entangle and snare the whirling disc during play to intermittently cause the sphere to rotate with the disc in response to the skill of player.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One of the objects of this invention is to provide a whirling top having a disc on a wrappable and stretchable string held between the hands surrounding which is a transparent sphere rotatably or pivotably freely mounted on the string together with a catching device connected to the inside periphery of the sphere to entangle and ensnare the disc member being actuated by the stretching and twisting of the string or operating cord.
Still another object is to provide a 3-component whirling toy actuated by the twisting and stretching of a string held between the hands in which a surrounding element is free of any control from the string directly but which is controlled by a device in the form of a rubber band or snare sporadically engagable with the rotating disc being energized by the string.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a general perspective view showing the toy being manipulated by the hands of the user.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view indicated by the line 22 in FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a transverse enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of FIGS. 1 and 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT As an example of one embodiment of this invention, there is shown a whirling toy comprising a pair of manipulating cords and 11 connected together at their outer ends 13 and 14 where they are suitably secured to appropriate cross handles 15 and 16. A whirling disc 12 revolving about an axis 17 has a pair of perforations 18 and 19 radially outwardly disposed relative to said axis through which pass the intermediate portions of the cords 10 and 11.
Patented Mar. 24, 1970 A transparent spherical element 20 surrounding the disc 12 has a polar axis 21 defined by enlarged holes 22 and 23 through which pass the cords 10 and 11 to permit free rotation of the sphere 20 on the cords 10 and 11.
A snaring element 24 within the sphere, which may take the form of a rubber band has one portion 25 fixed to the inside surface 26 of the sphere 20 on the equatorial diameter 27 of the sphere. I
The cross handles 15 and 16 are grabbed between the hands 28 and 29 and the entire unit comprising the sphere 20 and the disc 12 are swung around until the cords 10 and 11 become twisted. Then by a combination of swinging movement and stretching of the cords by the cross handles 15 and 16, the operator may cause the disc 12 to rotate back and forth by the unwrapping and wrapping up of the cords 10 within the sphere while the sphere as a whole stays in a stationary position. Should the opera tion, of the cords 11 by the cross handles 15 and 16 be manipulated in such a way as to cause the disc to float longitudinally toward one or the other of the openings 23 of the sphere 20, the disc 12 will be prevented from becoming snagged, snared or entangled with the rubber band 24. However, should the rubber band 24 be engaged and entangled about the disc 12, it will then cause the sphere 20 to rotate indicating an improper operation of the apparatus. In other words, it is the purpose to try to control the non-rotation of the sphere 20 while still manipulating the disc 12 in reversible rotary movements by the pulling on the ends of the cords 10 and 11 as described.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appendant claims are intended to be included herein.
What is claimed is:
1. A whirling toy comprising in combination:
(A) A pair of manipulating cords,
(B) Cross handles fixed to the outer ends of said cords,
(C) A whirling disc having a pair of perforations receiving said cords,
(D) A transparent spherical element surrounding said disc having enlarged holes at the poles of said sphere receiving said cords and freely rotatable thereon,
(E) And a snaring element within said spherical element attached to the inside surface of said spherical element.
2. A whirling toy comprising as in claim 1 wherein said snaring element comprises an elastic band fixed at one point on the equatorial portion of the inside surface of said spherical element.
