WATER-HEATING ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed January 6, 1912. Serial No. 669,896.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM B. l/Vnnrz, citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater- Heating Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to water heating attachments, and has for its object to provide a simple apphance adapted to be detachablyapplied toa burner of any description, for the purpose of ralsing the temperature of cold water so that it may be used for bathing or other purposes.
'lVith the above object in view the attachment includes a coil of pipe having end portions disposed approximately diametrically with relation to the coil or convolutions of the pipe and extending away from each other at one end of the said coil. These end portions serve as means for supporting the coil in a cylinder over a burner which may use gas, oil or other fuel. In fact, the attachment is not confined in-its use to gas or oil burners, but may be applied equally as well to stoves of any description in which fuels, as for'instance wood and coal, are used. One of the end portions of the pipe is connected by means of a rubber hose with the discharge nozzle of a font or any suitable water supply, and the other end of the pipe is connected by means of a hos-e or tube with a sprinkler, brush, douche tip or other suitable appliance.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resort-ed to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the water heating attachment applied to an oil stove; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the stove and the heater; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of the cylinder of the stove with the heater applied; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a coil pipe which is a part of the heater.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing the water heating attachment is shown applied to a heater which uses oil as a fuel, but as above stated the attachment may be applied to any other form of heating apparatus. Over the burner of the heater is located a cylinder 1 which is open at its ends and which is provided at one edge of the opening in its top with a recess 2.
The water heater proper includes a continuous pipe having a coil 3 with a section 4 extending longitudinally of the coil and outside of the convolutions thereof. The upper end of the coil 3 is continued into an end portion 5 and the upper end of the section 4 is continued into an end portion 6. The portions 5 and 6 are disposed in opposite direc-tions and diametrically with relation to the coil 3. The portions 5 and 6 are located at the upper or the same end of the coil 3. A font 7 or other device for containing water, or other source of water supply, is located at a point remote from the cylinder 1 and preferably at an elevated position with relation to the same. This font is provided with a valved discharge cock 8. A flexible hose or tube 9 is connected at one end with the cock 8 and at its other end with the pipe portion 6. A flexible hose or tube 10 is connected at one end with the pipe portion 5 and at its other end may be connected any suitable device, as for instance a douche or syringe nozzle, a sprinkler, a sponge, or a brush.
The fitting by which the end of the tube 10 is connected with the brush nozzle or similar device is provided with a valve 11 and in order to make tight connections between the ends of the tubes 9 and 10 which are connected to the pipe portions 5 and 6, sections of coiled spring 12 are exteriorly positioned upon the said tubes 9 and 10, and when the tubes have been slipped over the ends of the pipe portions 5 and 6 these springs are slipped so that their inner end portions are also over the ends of the pipe portions 5 and 6 and thus the ends of the tubes 9 and 10 are securely held on the ends 5 and 6 of the pipe and are braced against splitting and are also held against internal pressure should the water in the coil 3 be converted into steam.
The opening in the top of the cylinder 1 is just sufiiciently large to receive the coil 3, and when the said coil is inserted in the upper end of the cylinder the pipe section 4 is slipped down through the recess 2 at the side of the opening in the top of the cylinder. hen the end portions 5 and 6 of the pipe come in contact with the top of the cylinder the coil 3 and the end portions 5 and 6 thereof are turned so that the end portion .6 is lodged in the recess 2. Thus the coil 3 is held in proper position in the cylinder l and the weight of the coil is sustained by the end portions 5 and 6 which rest upon the top of the cylinder 1. Inasmuch as the end portions 5 and 6 are diametrically disposed with relation to the coil 3 the said coil will hang-approximately vertical in the cylinder 1, and the opposite side portions of the recess 2 will prevent the end portion 4 from moving about the upper end of the cylinder as the apparatus is being used. Therefore it will be seen that the top of the cylinder 1 affords the only means of support for the pipe of which the coil 8 and portions 5 and 6 are components, and when it is desired to use the heater for other purposes than warming water, the end portions 5 and 6 of the pipe are lifted so that the sides of the portion 6 are elevated above the ends or sides of the recess 2. The pipe may then be rotated to bring the section 4 in vertical alinement I with the recess 2 and then the pipe may be Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the f commissioner? of Patents,
lifted out of the cylinder 1. In doing so the coil passes through the opening in the top of the cylinder, while the pipe section I passes through the recess 2 at the side of the said opening. When the pipe is thus removed the heater may be used for other purposes, as for instance cooking or warming air.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a cylinder open at its upper and lower ends and provided at the side of the opening at its upper end with a recess, a pipe having a continuous coil and a portion extending longitudinally of the coil and eXteriorly of the same, said pipe having end portions one extending from the coil and the other extending from the portion which is longitudinally disposed with relation to the coil, said end portions eX- tending in opposite directions, the diameter of the coil of the pipe being less than the diameter of the opening in the top of the cylinder but the distance from the center of the coil to the outer side of the longitudinally disposed portion of the pipe being greater than the radius of the opening in the top of the cylinder but less than the distance from the center of the opening in the top of the cylinder to the outer edge portion of the recess.
In testimony whereof,I affix my signature in presence of twowit-nesses.
