PAUL R. PAULSEN, OF ASTORIA, OREGON.
SAFETY-HOOK.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed May 29, 1912. Serial No. 700,514.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL R. PAULSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, in the county of Clatsop and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in looking devices for hooks and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, strong an inexpensive device of the kind whereby the guard tongue is kept firmly in place by the draft or weight on the hook and is automatic in its action.
In the accompanying drawing, I show a hook of the preferred design though I do not bind myself to this particularly shaped hook as the nose of said hook may be made square or of any shape to suit the fancy or use to which it is to be put.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my device showing the hook closed with the guard tongue set. Fig. 2 is a side view of my device showing the guard tongue open, and Fig. 3 is a rear View of my device showing the guard tongue in set position, with link passing through both the eyelet of the hook and guard tongue.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a hook shaped body portion, the rear end 6 of which has an opening 7 formed therethrough for the passage of a link 8. This link 8 may, if desired, be one of the links of a chain. Link 8 also passes through the eyelet 9 of the guard tongue 10, the body portion 5 having an opening 11 formed therethrough for the passage of said tongue. A hearing pin 12 passes transversely through the guard tongue 10 and rests upon the upper face of the body portion 5.
The operation of the device is as follows:
It is obvious that when the body portion 5 is subjected to a strain or weight, that the action of link 8 will draw the rear end 6 and eyelet 9 together, thereby moving the guard tongue into closed position as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to open the guard tongue for the purpose of engaging the hook with any object, draft upon the link 8 is released and the parts moved to the position illustrated in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the in vention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview, such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a hook like body portion having a slot formed therethrough, of a guard tongue having substantially the same width as said slot and passing through said slot, a rearwardly extending eyelet portion carried by the guard tongue, a link which passes through both the rear end of the body portion and the eyelet portion, and a bearing pin passing transversely through the guard tongue and bearing loosely upon the face of the hook like body portion upon the side thereof remote from the eyelet portion.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature, in presence 0 two witnesses.
