BUCKLE.
Patented Jan. 8, 1889.
* m *Y IIII.. nmnnnmnuu imma n UTTED STATES TET OFFICEo LEONARD L. CONKEY, OF BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,742, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed November 14, 1888. Serial No. 290,768. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEONARD L. (JONKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beuton Harbor, in the county of Bei-rien and State ot hflichigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles, ot' which the following is a specification.
lhe above-mentioned device is designed to form a buckle for a chain, rope, strap, cable, or other strand or thong which will admit ot' the chain, rope, cable, or other strand being passed through in one direction, but will pre vent the same from passing' in an opposite direction.
A further and fuller description of the dc- Vice is as follows, reference being had to the accompailying drawings, making' part ol' this specification, in which- Figure I is a View ot' the buckle with the strand held in place. Fig. 2 is a sectional View with a part of the hinge removed to show the working ot' the coiled metallic spring which Yfacilitates the working of the buckletongue,
Like letters ret'er to like parts in both Views.
In the drawings, A represents the jaws or frame ot the buckle.
B represents the hinge, on which the tongue turns.
C is the tongue, which is somewhat longer than the space between the hinge B and the front e of the jaws or frame A, which tongue is formed with a slot, c, in its outer end.
D is a coiled metallic spring within the hinge B, and which spring has the end f attached to the jaws or frame A and the end g attached to the tongue C.
The purpose oi' the invention is to prevent anyY backward slipping of the chain, rope, cable, or other strand or thong that is being passed through, and the practical working is as follows: The chain or other strand is passed upward, as in Fig. l, when the tongue C will be lifted from the frame or jaws A by turning on the hinge B, allowin the strand to pass :freely so long as it is forced forward; but should the force be exerted backward or in the opposite direction the tongue C, aided by the coiled metallic spring D, will descend against the tront e ot' the jaws or frame A, and the strand will be forced into the slotc of the tongue C and its movement in that direction entirely stopped.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle comprising, in combination, a frame or jaws, A, a tongue, C, the outer end of which is provided with a slot, c, which tongue C works upon a hinge, B, together with a coiled metallic spring, D, within the hinge B, attached to the frame or jaws A and the tongue C, so that the tension will incline to keep the outer end ot' the tongue C against the outer end of the jaws or frame A, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. LEONARD L. CONKEY.
