VICTOR K. 13LOMSTROM, or ESCANABA, MICHIGAN.
CHAIN-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed September 23, 1912. Serial No. 721,909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR K. BLoMsTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved device for fastening a neck or other chain and adjusting the length thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this class which may be easily manipulated and when the chain to which it is applied is adjusted to the desired length will retain and hold the chain reliably in adjusted position.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a neck chain equipped with this device; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the clasp or fastener detached; Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the chain showing the fastener detent engaged with one of the links of the chain. M
In the embodiment illustrated a link neck chain 1 is shown having a metal ring 2 at one end and a clamp or fastener 3 at its other end. This fastener 3 is constructed of a single piece of gold filled spring wire or other suitable strong resilient material bent midway its ends into substantially hair pin shape with a loop 4: at the bend therein to afiord the proper resiliency for the arms of the device. One of the arms or bars 5 of said device is straight and is secured intermediately' of its ends to the chain 1 by means of an eye 6 preferably formed integral with its outer face and said bar has its terminal bent into an eye 7 which forms a reinforce and facilitates the insertion of the chain between said arm and the free or spring arm 8. This free or spring arm or bar 8 has an outward bulge or pocket 9 midway its ends to receive and hold the chain 1. A detent in the form of a stud 10 extends laterally from the straight bar 5 opposite the pocket 9 on the inner face of said bar 5 and forms auxiliary locking means for the chain when in adjusted position and prevents any possibility of its slipping, said projection being flesligned to extend through one of the chain in s.
In the use of this device after it has been secured to one end of a chain it is passed through the ring 2 at the other end of the chain and the chain adjusted to its desired length, a portion of the chain being doubled for this purpose. The main or body portion of the chain is then inserted between the spring arms of the fastener 3 until it reaches .the pocket 9 in which position it is held reliably by engagement of the detent 10 with one of the links as is shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. When it is desired to release or remove the chain the spring arms are sprung apart and the chain withdrawn from between them.
By the use of this device chains may be lengthened or shortened without removing any portion thereof or without tying knots therein such as is usually done with chains of this character.
While I have described my invention with more or less minuteness as regards details and as being embodied in certain precise forms, I do not desire to be limited thereto unduly any more than is pointed out in the claims. On the contrary, I contemplate all proper changes in form, construction and I arrangement, the omission. of immaterial elements and substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for fastening and adjusting the length of chains comprising a spring metal clip having two substantially parallel arms, one of which is provided on its inner face with means for passing through a chain link and detachably connecting said clip with the chain at any desired point.
2. A device for fastening and adjusting the length of chains comprising a spring metal fastener having two substantially parallel arms, one of which is provided with means for connection with a chain and the other with a pocket on its inner face, the arm opposite said pocketed arm having a laterally extending detent on its inner face extending toward said pocket and adapted In testimony whereof I have hereunto set to extend into a chain llnk. my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 3. A device for fastening and adjusting nesses.
the length of chains comprising a spring VICTOR K. BLOMSTROM.

which is provided with means for engaging TORVAL E. STRoM,
and securing a chain between said jaws. MATHIAS PETERSEN.
