Patented Apr. 12, 19233..
Application filed July 31, 1920. Serial No. 400,426.
1/ 0 all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, FRED M. Swnnrz, a citizen or the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a speciiication. v
My invention relates to that class of lingerie and hair clasps and the like that comprise relatively movable jaws carrying an intermediate spring bearing member.
The principal objects of the present invention are simplicity, strength and inexpensiveness of construction; the avoidance of the use of solder in attaching the bearing member; the complete housing of the pintle; and the disposition of the inner end of the bearing member in such a manner as not to catch in the material clasped.
My invention consists in the means and mechanism for producing the results above specified substantially as hereinafter described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the base and bearing member and their bearing is formed,
Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same after bending,
Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the tongue,
Fig. at, a side elevation of the complete clasp closed, I
ll 5, a plan view of the same open, showing a portion of the tongue broken away, and
Fig. 6, an enlarged section on line 6--6 of Fig. 5.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the views.
in the construction illustrated a blank, suchas shown in l, is out from thin res silicnt metal comprising an oblongportion or strip 9 provided at one end with a longitudinally disposed notch or slot 10. Extending centrally of the other end of the portion 9 is narrow portion or neck 12 extending to a somewhat broader oblong portion. 13 having on its outer end a linger F 14;. line blank is bent with the portion 9 forming the base or lower jaw oi the clasp; the portion 13 forming; the arched bow or resilient bearing member; the portion 12. a circular loop; and the free end of the p01" tion 9 curled to form a tubular eye 15 Whose slot 10 loosely receives therethrough the tinge 14.
The loop 12 embraces a pivot member, which is also embraced by spaced inturned sleeves 18 which are integral with and project from one end of an arched resilient tongue or jaw 20 whose opposite end is inwardly curved to "form a hoolr 21 adapted to snap over the tube 15.
The material to be clasped is embraced between the tongue 20 and the member 13, the hook 21. serving as the catch for fastening the tongue after insertion of the mater. The clamping material is protected from contact at every point from the pivot 16 by virtue of the sleeves l8 and the loop 12, and there are no projecting parts at or adjacent the hinge to catch in the clasped material. The integral character of the loop 12and its relation to the members 9 and 13 impart great strength to the entire structure, and the use of solder is avoided.
it claim In a clasp, stationary aw comprising a base, on arched resilient bearing arm, and a circular loop uniting one end of the base with the liiearing arm. a loop integral with the othe end of the base provided with a slotarlaptcd to loosely receive the free end oi the arm, pivot member embraced by the loop, a movablej aw, sleeves on the movable jaw embracing; the pivot member, and a hook on the mo *able jaw engaging the second loop. M
In testimony whereof I signature.
have atiixed my FRED M. S /VARTZ.
