fJOHN RQHARTMANN AND MARTAN KAIS, 0F PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
vLetters Patent No. 105,938,11ated .August 2, 1870; 'antedated July 28, 1870.
"IMPROVED HAT .AND` CAPHOLDER ANDKBRACKBT.
. m The Sclredule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same wow- To all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that we, JOHN R. HARTMANN and MAR- TAN Kals, ofthe city of Peoria, in the county of Peoriaand in theState of Illinois, -have invented an Improved Hat and CapLHolder or Bracket; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description there'of, reference being lhad to the an` `nexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and
in whichv Figure 1 represents aperspective view. f Figure 2, a sectional elevation. i Figure 3, asuperlicial view.
` Like letters in the different figures of the drawing indicate like parts.
f This invention consists' ofY a horizontal swinging bracket, with a clip on the upper' side of the bracket, for holdingft-he inserted rimof a hat, cap, or bonnet, and a guard beneath, to keep the hat or other headlim upright or steady, the vertical shaft of the bracket having a head or collar, se't in a pivot, fastened to the under surface of the seat of a church-pew, or other convenient recess, ont of the way of the dresses of ladies or gentlemen, and havingalso a spiral spring, or equivalent means of forcing the bracket back into the recess or under .the seat, as before mentioned, out of the way.
- A represents a ebrace or small bracket, fastened withscrews to the under. surface of any convenient recess or seat, D, out of the way, and fitted with van eye or pivot, for retaining the head or supporting-coly lar k ot' the shaft d of the swinging arm, and'also a "seat or bearing, t, for the lower part of the shaft.
cess in which the device is hnng,) confines the shaft d, being fixed thereto. in one place, the other endA of spring being set in a block or eye, g, in the blace A.
` The other end e of the bracket B is bent downward vertically fora few inches, and terminates in a crossvbracket or horizontal wire, f, set at aright angle to the arm B, and curved to fit the shape of the exterorgof a hat E. I y f` The arm B is also provided witlraclip or spring, C,
fastened thereto or made in the same piece, andd g when released, keeps the same within or under the pew-seat or other recess:
When it is desired'to conveniently dispose ofa hat orcap, the bracket B is swung from the recess, and the rim of-the'bat or cap inserted between the spring O and bracket, the curve of theformer freely allowing the upwardV curve of hat-rim to` keep its ordinary shape, without bending it in the slightest manner, the
body of the hat resting against the upright brace e,
and kept steady from swaying by the" horizontal braces ff.
Gloves o r other articles of wearing-apparel may he held in the hat. y
The spring always keeps the hat, when thus disposed of, ont of the way of ladies dresses or of the knees of the occupants of pew, and particularly ont of the way of children.,
Having thus fully described in y invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, isl 1. The swinging bracket B,'operating automatically by means ofa-splral spring, b, or its equivalent, in
4combination with an arm or shaft, tl, of the bracket,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. g
2. The swinging bracketB, with shaft d, collar K, spring b, brace A, spring G, and the transverse braces or guards ff, constructed and operating substantially as set fort-h.
3. Thecombination of the spring O with a swinging bracket, B, substantially as set forth, for the pnrpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing hat and cap-holder, we have hereunto setour hands this 6th day of January, 1870.
